Dareyona Lynetta Smith February 14, 2001 – March 13, 2019 Share this obituary Send Flowers View/Sign Guest Book| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card Dareyona Lynetta Smith was born at St. Bernard Hospital on February 14, 2001, to Katina Gunn and Darrell Smith. She was introduced to church at a young age, by attending services with her mother and great-grandmother. Dareyona was baptized at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church where she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior.

Dareyona attended Wentworth Elementary School, and after graduation continued her education at CICS Ralph Ellison High School. During her time at Ralph Ellison she was a dedicated athlete and member of the basketball, softball, and volleyball teams. In addition to participating in multiple sports, Dareyona also maintained her grades and made the Honor Roll.

Affectionately known to her peers, faculty and staff as “Yona G”, Dareyona was an advocate for education, a mentor to younger students, and an inspiration to all. Dareyona was a of strength and light with a beautiful smile, and infectious spirit that touched everyone she encountered. Always willing to lend a helping hand and support her family and friends, Dareyona was a selfless young woman.

Wanting to make a positive social impact and affect change in the world, Dareyona traveled to Washington D.C., alongside her mother, to march against gun violence in 2018. In her free time, Dareyona enjoyed music, hanging with friends, and spending quality time with her family and speding quality time with her family. Dareyona was called home Wednesday, March 13, 2019.

She leaves to cherish her memory her mother, Katina Gunn: father Darrell (Crystal) Smith; grandmother, Georgetta Carter-Niang; great-grandmother, Albertinne Gunn; god mother, Lisa Edmondson; and a host of brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family, classmates, and friends.
