Darlene’s Obituary Darlene Asmus (1947-2019) Cedar Falls – Darlene Asmus, 71, of Cedar Falls, passed away peacefully on May 22nd, at her home in Cedar Falls, following a courageous battle against ovarian cancer. She was born November 21, 1947, in Manhattan, NYC, daughter of Harry and Rita Guillaume. She married Willard Harold Asmus Jr on February 22nd, 1974, in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Darlene was a 1966 graduate of the Iowa State Teacher’s College High School (later known as Northern University High School) and attended both the University of Iowa and Northern Iowa. She earned her BA in Art Education and MFA in Photography from the University of Northern Iowa. She taught elementary art for over 30 years at Orange, Longfellow, Logan, and Irving Elementary schools in Waterloo in addition to teaching guitar, jewelry making, and other art related fields at the Cedar Falls Rec Center.

Darlene was awarded the “Gold Star Teacher Award” in 2000 and was highly respected across the state of Iowa for her innovative work in curriculum and development. Darlene was a devoted wife, mother, grandma, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend to so many. Her beautiful smile, infectious personality, ability to find the positives in any situation, and love for her family and friends was a daily occurrence.

She always searched for and brought out the best in others. Her love was endless and she will always be remembered as a loving and caring person, who put the needs of others before her own. Survived by: her husband, Willard Harold Asmus Jr of Cedar Falls; a son, Kody (Michelle) Asmus, four grandchildren, Paige, Mason, Brady, and Baby Asmus (due in Oct 2019) all of Ankeny, a sister, Jacquelyn (John) Wesolosky of Honolulu, Hawaii; brothers/sisters-in-law Eileen Staner, Ken and Debra Harting, Dennis Rucker, and Dawn Rucker; nephews Paul Keeley, Kevin Henkle, Brent Staner, Jeremy Rucker, Josh Rucker, and Alec Pinsonneault; nieces Leslie Nixon, Kendra Sturgill, Halle Harting, Jamie Hanson, Nicole Rucker, Kim Schlue, and Jennifer Nelson; and multiple great-nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by: her father and mother, Harry and Rita Guillaume. Celebration of Life: from 4-8 p.m. on June 8th, at the Maucker Union Ballroom on the campus of the University of Northern Iowa. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the University of Northern Iowa Foundation for the Darlene Guillaume Asmus Scholarship.
