Darlene Rose Hughes Obituary Photo

Obituary for Darlene Rose Hughes Darlene Rose Hughes Darlene was born 2/25/1936 in Norman, Nebraska. She graduated high school and teachers college in Kearney, NE. She taught elementary school in rural Nebraska for two years prior to joining Kansas-Nebr Natural Gas Company as an Executive Secretary in Hastings, Nebraska.

KN is where she met her future husband, Robert Hughes. As the story goes (her version), Bob was working in Big Springs, CO for KN at the time of his marriage proposal. Upon hearing of this, Darlene’s boss had Bob transferred back to Hastings so we wouldn’t lose his Secretary.

Bob’s version claimed it was due to his normal job training/rotation. Regardless, they were married on May 15, 1960 and made their home in Hastings and raised their two children, Craig and Melinda. Darlene was a committed, wife, mother and homemaker.

She was always active with something such as craft clubs, bowling, gardening, and traveling to name a few. Darlene followed Bob in his career with KN to Casper, WY, Lakewood, CO, Glenwood Springs, CO before retiring in Fort Collins in 1995. Unfortunately Bob preceded Darlene in death in 1996.

Darlene chose to make Fort Collins her home for the next 20+ years and continued to enjoy many activities and traveling the world with friends and family. Darlene was preceded in death by her 5 siblings – Albert (Roy) Jacobsen, Cletus Jacobsen, Francis Jacobsen, Norma (Jacobsen) Cary and Evelyn (Jacobsen) Hill. Her children, nieces and nephews have many fond memories of Darlene and her siblings laughing, joking and playing cards.

There was nothing like a Jacobsen family gathering. We all believe they are currently enjoying the family favorite card game of Somerset with a constant roar of laughter and joking on who is playing it the best and the right way! Darlene is survived by her two children, son Craig and wife Yvonne Hughes of Richmond, IN, Melinda (Hughes) and Jim Smit of Fort Collins, CO, 5 grandchildren, Megan (Hughes) and Bobby Weak of Gretna, NE, Tyler and Cassie Hughes of Gretna, NE, Stephanie Smit of Fort Collins, CO, Justin Smit of Colorado Springs, CO and Cody Smit of Fort Collins, two great grandchildren, Emmett House of Fort Collins and Hannah Hughes of Gretna, NE, and numerous nieces and nephews.
