Obituary for DAVID ALAN BAGGETT David Amon Baggett May 29, 1930 – July 28, 2018 Born in Crenshaw County, Alabama, to Charlie and Ludie (Loard) Baggett, David was one of eight children. He worked his way through Auburn University, a member of the Army R.O.T.C. and of the marching band.

He described the four years at Auburn as the best of his life. Upon graduation, he served with the 101st Airborne with the rank of first lieutenant. He married Sandra Moon, of Hueytown, and they had two daughters.

David had a long career as a horticulturist in Birmingham, owning several garden shops and landscaping businesses. He hosted a local call-in radio program, and wrote for the Alabama Garden Writers Association. He developed a container gardening system which was produced and sold through Tupperware, where he directed the division.

He had a special interest in tropical plants and enjoyed exploring the flora of Hawaii, Australia, and New Zealand. He was a member of Hueytown First United Methodist Church. David is survived by his daughters, Virginia Baggett Radford of Madison, and Laurie Baggett McCombs of Hueytown, and by grandchildren James Radford, jr.

of Decatur, Georgia, Virginia Radford Crutchfield of Columbus, Georgia, Colleen Radford Trousdale of Florence, Erin Laurie Limerick of Alabaster, and Charles Austin McCombs of Birmingham. He is also survived by five great-grandchildren, and by two brothers, William Baggett of Riverside, California, and Douglas Baggett, of Niceville, Florida, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He will also be remembered by his friend Pedro Reyes, to whom he was a mentor, and the Reyes family.

Rev. Dean Bowers will officiate at a graveside service at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 31, at the Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo. Memorial gifts may be made to Hueytown First United Methodist Church or the Garden Writers Association Foundation.
