David “Dave” Arlow Lund, a beloved husband, father and grandpa, went to be with his wife, JoAnn, in their eternal home after church on Sunday March 31st, 2019. Dave was a person who never saw the bad in anybody and had a friend in everyone. He “never met a stranger” and had no difficulty talking to anyone.
He had a heart bigger than he could handle, eyebrows that danced and a smile that could light up the room. He was known as a man who could fix anything, but best known for his expertise in old trucks. He was a creative problem solver for flat roofs issues, an authority on farming and agriculture-technology, and someone who loved his church and teaching his Sunday school class.
Dave had recently moved back “home” to be close to family in Alice, North Dakota following his wife, of 60 years, passing last December 3rd. Though he was very active and on the Trustees of First United Methodist Church in Houston, Dave quickly fell in love with both the church and pastor of Trinity Lutheran in Enderlin, ND. As he and JoAnn had done in each of their communities, they were important and giving to their churches.
They had 60+ years of charitable missions work from Nome, Alaska, to Houston, to Haiti – anywhere they were needed. He was born May 23, 1934 on a farm near Hillsboro, ND, to Haakon and Ruby Lund. He attended grade and high school in Christine, ND and graduated from the Nome High School in 1952.
He went to college at NDAC (NDSU), where he met JoAnn, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in AG Mechanical Engineering in 1956. While in college he joined ROTC and became a 2nd Lt. in the Army Corp of Engineers.
Dave was very active as an officer in the North Dakota Army Reserves and was called to active duty during the Berlin Crisis where he served at Ft. Leonard wood, MO. His first employment was at John Deere, now Deer and Weber, in Edina, MN.
He was married to JoAnn Tomlinson on Dec. 27, 1957, where they lived in Edina and later became manager of a John Deere store in Devils Lake, ND. He returned to Fargo and worked for Rent or Buy Equipment Company, and in the 1960s the family moved to Enderlin, ND where David owned and managed Tri-County Implement dealership.
He was an innovator and promoted no-till corn and modern use of large equipment and commercial fertilizer and herbicides, now a standard practice in farming. In 1972 he sold Tri-County Implement and moved his family to Houston in 1973. He worked briefly with the J. I. Case and then Letourneau Company.
He then became self-employed and owned and operated a roofing company using innovative concepts in construction and coverings. Dave was preceded in death by his parents ‘Haakon and Ruby’ and his wife, JoAnn. They leave behind two children; son, Bradley of Houston and his daughter Madelyn and step daughter Hannah and husband John Sanches; daughter Cindy Livin and husband Jeff of Lufkin, Texas and their three children Cassidy and her husband Cash Kirkland, Jessie and Tanner; his brothers Roald and his wife Janet Lund of Pelican Rapids, MN, Gordon and his wife Donna Lund of Enderlin, ND, Daniel and his wife Candy Lund of Alice, ND, and sisters Joan Wolsky and husband Gene of Oriska,ND, and Isabel Paulson and husband Mike of St. Paul, MN.
JoAnn and David will be interred together at Arlington Cemetery in Wisconsin. A celebration of life will be Saturday, the 6th of April at 2:00 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran in Enderlin, ND. A memorial service at First United Methodist Church in Houston will be held on Sunday the 28th of April at 2.
