OBITUARY David “Buck” Perry Phillips Jr. October 6, 1964 – January 14, 2019 David Perry “Buck” Phillips, Jr. died on January 14, 2019. He is survived by his wife Paula, stepdaughter Lacy Fecher (David and their daughter Macy), his parents Mary Margaret and David Phillips, his brother Frank Hardy Phillips (Carol Ann), nephew Frank Phillips Jr., nieces Annie and Margot Phillips, and his aunt Susan Hardy Justice. Buck grew up in Lookout Mountain, TN.
He graduated from Baylor School where he was president of the student body and won the Herbert B. Barks, Sr. Founders Award. After Baylor he went to the University of Alabama where he received his BS and MBA degrees in five years. At Alabama he was a member of SAE, ODK, Order of Omega, Jasons, Blue Key, and won the 1987 Outstanding Greek Man of the Year Award.
In student government he was Executive Assistant to the SGA president. For most of Buck’s adult life he was in the crushed stone business. During these years he was Division President of Rinker Materials with 530 employees across 34 plant locations.
Numerous business awards came his way during his career. A former boss said of Buck, “He was the best developer of people I have ever seen”. In Birmingham, Buck was a former member of Mountain Brook Club, where in his younger years, he enjoyed playing golf.
He also enjoyed learning to fly and had his private pilot license and was a USCG Marine Captain. All through his life his faith in Jesus Christ was of utmost importance to him. From high school on he attended and taught Bible studies and Sunday School.
He was a speaker for Stonecroft and a lay pastor. In his last few years he and his wife developed a ministry called Breakaway Pointe. Here Christian men coming out of prison were put in a Christian environment, where they were discipled and taught a trade, readying them for reentry into the world outside of prison.
After his cancer diagnosis this ministry was donated to an experienced team of men who will continue to carry the vision forward as our nation undergoes prison reform. During his battle with cancer he was an inspiration to countless people through his testimonies, teaching and preaching. He never lost sight of the fact that God is sovereign and that Jesus Christ is on His throne.
