David Gutierrez – Went to be with his Lord February 6, 2019 at Sunny Hill Nursing Home. Age 94 years. Survived by his loving wife of 72 years Carmen Gutierrez (nee Delgado), two sons, Richard D. (Alice) Gutierrez and Thomas Gutierrez.
Two grandchildren Holly (Aleks) Trobok and Aaron (Nobuko) Gutierrez. Four great-grandchildren Luka and Stefan Trobok and Vivienne and Julian Gutierrez. Four brothers Tony (Dorathy) Gutierrez, Jesse (Donna) Gutierrez, Robert (Barbara) Gutierrez and Dr. Daniel (Barbara) Gutierrez.
Two sisters, Carmela Camarena and Rachel Prado, as well as, numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents Natividad (1979) and Felipa (2000) Gutierrez, a brother Joseph Gutierrez (2011), and a sister Hope Angeles (2018). David was born March 1, 1924 in Joliet, IL.
He attended Parks Grade School, Central Junior High School and Joliet Central High School. A diligent and hard worker, David left high school to help support his parents and siblings. He then enlisted with the U.S. Army where he served as a medic.
David was a W.W.II Veteran, most notably a survivor of the Battle of the Bulge. He returned home and received his GED and began his career with Olin Chemical Co., retiring after 38 years. He served in a variety of capacities as a community activist and volunteer.
David was a life-member of Stone City VFW Post #2199. He served as Post Chaplain, participated with the Honor Guard and the Rifle Squad. David was a co-founder of American Legion Post #1284, and later Harwood Post #5, as well as, a member of the American Legion Band Color Guard.
David attended St. Mary Magdalene Church, then became a member of Judson Memorial Baptist Church. He was a dedicated servant of the Hispanic community, serving with the Santa Cruz Food Pantry, providing food to those in need. Because of his tireless work he received The Certificate of Recognition Advocate Award from the Latino Business Association in 2004 and 2008.
Many will remember his work as a New Lenox election judge and an advocate for the Joliet public schools as a referendum speaker. He also participated as a coach for the Belmont Little League. David was also a founder for the Highland Park Neighborhood Watch Program and he enjoyed membership in the Ceco Recreation Club with his family for many years.
David’s family would like to extend their loving appreciation to the many who visited him and to those in his extended family who helped care for David while he stayed at Sunny Hill, most notably the Second Avenue care staff for their compassionate assistance. Private family funeral services were held to commemorate David’s life. He will be interred in the Abraham Lincoln Cemetery at a later date.
