Age 90, of Dormont, passed away peacefully on Thursday morning February 14, 2019. Demetre is survived by his wife of 58 years, Despina, daughter Georgia (Dan) Hardwick, son Chris (Becky) and grandchildren Nikki, Alex, Meg and Dimitri, all of Pittsburgh. Demetre was born to Greek-Cypriot parents on March 5, 1928 in Alexandria, Egypt.

He grew up swimming in the Mediterranean and was an active member of the International Boy Scouts. Demetere was a mechanic for the family business and then joined the British Army during WW II, working in the motor pool. It is rumored that he was a driver for Winston Churchill when he visited Egypt.

At the age of 32, Demetre immigrated to the U.S. to be with his sister Seva. He married Despina and settled in Dormont, PA. He was a lifelong member of the Painters District Council 57 Union.

Later in life Demetre became an American citizen and cherished the vote. He loved gardening, feeding the birds and visiting with his grandchildren. Family and friends will be received at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church 123 Gilkeson Road Pittsburgh, PA 15228 on Monday from 6-8 PM.

Services will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 AM in the St. George Chapel at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cemetery, 894 Ringeisen Rd. Allison Park, PA 15101. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Gateway Hospice 9380 McKnight Rd.
