Obituary for Dennis “Doc” Richard Thompson Dennis “Doc” Richard Thompson, 73, of Rockwell, IA died Thursday, November 1, 2018 at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa. A visitation will be held from 5-7 pm on Friday, November 9, 2018 at St. Peter Lutheran Church, 502 2nd St S, Rockwell. A funeral service with a one hour prior visitation will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, November 10, 2018 at the church with Reverend Joel Dahlen and Reverend Rhea Evanson officiating.

Following lunch and visiting time, Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City. Dennis was born on December 12, 1944 in Mason City, IA to Richard and Dorothy (Rucker) Thompson. He graduated from Rockwell High School and then completed his undergrad at Iowa State University.

Dennis then went on to Pacific University in Oregon and lastly graduated from the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago, IL. He began working in Clear Lake, then Mason City and lastly had his own practice in Lake Mills, IA for 44 years. Dennis also practiced regionally as a traveling doctor.

He was extremely passionate about optometry; he enjoyed helping adults and children with their vision. He especially loved seeing the smile on a child’s face the first time they could see clearly. Dennis also felt very blessed and appreciative towards his fellow associates.

Dennis was a lifetime member of the Iowa Optometric Association, US Jaycees and Master Gardener. In his free time, he loved going fishing with his father and two sons. He was an avid golfer, Minnesota Twins/Vikings fan and Iowa State Cyclones fan.

Dennis liked traveling and camping. Above all else, his family was very special to him and he valued family gatherings. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 21 years, Lorna Thompson of Rockwell; children: Christopher (Kristin) Thompson and their children Sydney and Jonah of Roberts, WI, Cynthia Huot and her children Elizabeth and Alexander of Moorehead, MN, Grant (Nicole) Thompson and their children Gavin, Lincoln, Evelyn and Isaac of Newman Grove, NE and Courtney (Edward) Porter of Newport Beach, CA; sister Carol (Rollin) Heinzerling of Florida and their children Susan (Tim) Kane and JR (Crystal) Heinzerling and their families of North Carolina.
