Dennis’ Obituary Dennis P. Cox, all around great guy, and even better, loving, Dad. The Dad that had endless time for fishing and snorkeling and camping and sing a longs and road trips — all the things we loved to do. He was the grand Dad that was always on show and tell and always had a geology presentation for the class.

He was always a local – Brazil, Puerto Rico, China, Mongolia – everyone loved him wherever he went. He ‘fit in’ to the point of family embarrassment as he taught us all to appreciate and respect the people and places we visit. The pinnacle of Dennis’ career as a porphyry mineral deposit expert came after his retirement, age seventy, travelling around Mongolia with camels and yurts, and discovering the world’s largest copper deposit — Oyu Tolgoi.

He just looked at the ground, broke some rocks, and figured out it was there. If he could have been something other than a Geologist my Dad would have liked to have been a cowboy. Not that kind of cowboy either – he would have been the non-confrontational kind, eating cowboy food and singing cowboy songs.

He was the quintessential old timer. With a Ph. D from Stanford University, 1956, Dr, Cox was employed by Anaconda Copper Company in the Tintic Disrtict, Utah.

Visiting professor of geology at University of Bahia, Salvador, Brazil (instruction in Portuguese). Mapped the Serra de Jacobina, host of the Jacobina auriferous conglomerate. Geologist, U,S, Geological Survey, 1961-1995.

mapped the Tanama and Helecho porphyry copper deposits in Puerto Pico. Mapped the Ruby Creek and Kennecott deposits in Alaska. Studied the structural environment of the Ajo Porphyry Copper Deposit in Arizona.

Dr. Cox received the Department of Interior Meritorious Service Award in 1990 and retired in1995. As an independent consultant with BHP, Cox discovered and recommended licencing of the Oyu Tolgoi Copper-Gold Deposit in Mongolia in 1997. Born September 12, 1929, Died February 25, 2019 Survived by his four children Mary, Laura, John, and Sarah Anne, and his wife June.
