Mr. Dewey “Kimbrell” Barefield, Sr. age 98, of Valley, Alabama passed away on Saturday, December 8th, 2018. Mr. Barefield was born in Washington, Georgia on November 11th, 1920 to the late Dewey Hadson Barefield and Mary Belle Thorne Barefield. He was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Ruth Gauntt Barefield in 1997.

Kimbrell served his country in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II, where he was a bombardier. Upon returning from the war, he began his career in the Service Center of the West Point Pepperell Company and later retired as personnel director after 45 years of service. Kimbrell became a member of the Langdale United Methodist Church in 1946 and was the oldest living member of the church.

During his membership in the church, he chaired and or served on numerous committees within the United Methodist Church. He was a charter member of the Langdale United Methodist Church’s Methodist Men’s’ Club. Mr. Barefield was a pillar of the community and was very active up until his passing on Saturday.

He was a career blood donor who literally impacted the lives of hundreds of patients in our hospitals. As an act of humanity, Kimbrell donated the maximum amount of blood allowed in his lifetime and was recognized as a “Donor for Life”. He was awarded the Silver Beaver Award, a council-level distinguished service award of the Boy Scouts of America, for his volunteerism and impact on the lives of many youth through his service given to the council.

Kimbrell was a man who possessed many talents and interests in his lifetime. He was an avid gardener, which he often referred to as “Yard Work” and was a self-taught brick mason whose work can be observed in and around his home. He is survived by his son, Dewey Kimbrell Barefield, Jr. and his wife, Virginia, Sunset, SC; grandchildren, Aaron Barefield, Sunset, SC, Sasha Aaron, Chesapeake, VA; great-grandson, Lucas Kimbrell Aaron; sister-in-law, Joanne Gauntt, Albany, GA.

; numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 14th, 2018 at 1:00P.M. EST at the Langdale United Methodist Church with interment following in Langdale Cemetery. The Reverend Rusty Tate officiating the service.

His family will be receiving friends at the church on Friday from 12:00P.M. EST until 1:00P.M. EST. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made in Kimbrell’s memory to the Langdale United Methodist Church Barrel of Love Fund, 6301 20th Avenue, Valley, Alabama 36854.
