Dolores Della Lowthers, fondly known as Diz, 89 years old, passed away peacefully at home with family on Tuesday, February 12, 2019 after a long illness while under hospice care. Diz spent her childhood and raised her family in North Dakota, retiring from the U.S. Post Office. Diz spent the past 11 years in Southern California, moving to Vashon in October, 2018.
Diz will be remembered for her appreciation of beauty, her kindness, her generosity and compassion, her empathy and desire for justice all, her quick wit, her creative mind, and her imaginative storytelling. Diz loved being outdoors, cooking and enjoying great food with family, shopping at thrift stores, reading, knitting, painting, writing in her journal, collecting glassware and rocks, as well as playing cards. Diz lit up most when talking to her grandchildren and the family’s companion dogs.
She adored her children and grandchildren, as they did her. Diz taught us all how to have courage in the face of adversity and to love all people. Her children describe her as “the strongest person they know”.
We all deeply miss her tender loving care, her intelligent world view, and her quick wit. She would want you to know that in her last days, she was happy, at peace with life, felt loved, was free of pain that she was delighted to get to see snow again one last time. Diz was preceded in death by her father, Oscar Dahl, her mother, Mary Watts, her brother, Don Dahl, her ex-husband, Paul Lowthers, and her son, Greg Lowthers.
Diz is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Shawn DuFresne, Vashon, WA, her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Jo Lowthers and Rob Crowe, Casper, WY, her son and daughter-in-law Michael and Christina Lowthers, Phelan and Wrightwood, CA, her 10 grandchildren, Jessica Leary, Gretchen Leary, Joanna Viera, Garret DuFresne, Brittany Border, Jake Crowe, Nikki Lowthers, Natalie Lowthers, Jennifer Osland, Tausha Harrington and her 7 great grandchildren Angel Perez, Zoe Border, Olivia, Elaina and Aidan Viera, and Rian and Jax Harrington, as well as nieces and nephews, and friends. Diz would never want to leave anyone out. We wish to thank the wonderful, caring Providence Hospice Care Team, the Vashon Home Care Network and her home elder care provider, all of whom helped us give Diz her profoundly appreciated quality of life these last months.
