Obituary for Donna Mortensen (Hostetter) Donna June (Hostetter) Mortensen, was born on June 23, 1928, and died April 9, 2018, surrounded by her loving family after a brief illness. Born in Richfield, Colorado to Glen Hostetter and Maud (McDaniel) Hostetter, Donna had a wonderful childhood, surrounded by many family members and friends within less than a square mile. Growing up during the Great Depression, summers were spent with the whole family at her father’s sawmill in the Tusas, New Mexico and winters brought ice skating, sleigh rides, and simple activities that didn’t cost money to participate in.

It was a good life! After graduating from high school, Donna worked as a bookkeeper in La Jara, Colorado before serving an 18-month mission for the LDS Church in the Southern States Mission. Soon after returning home, she met her future husband, Ralph Mortensen, and on March 11, 1951, they were married in Taos, New Mexico.

Three months later their marriage was solemnized in the Logan, Utah LDS Temple, where they were sealed for Time and all Eternity. Donna and Ralph had seven children, Rebecca Wilson (Vaughn), Glenna Phillips(Larry), Mickie Ortiz (Mike), Ron Kent (Jill), Hal R. (Tina), Rocky D. (Kellene) and Lori Ann Mortensen, 43 grandchildren, 95 great-grandchildren with one on the way and 13 great-great grandchildren with one on the way and many “adopted” children and grandchildren, who she dearly loved. She was a loving wife of 50 years, mother, and grandmother.

She was a wonderful homemaker, cook, and an accomplished baker. Family gatherings and picnics were always punctuated with her delicious food made from scratch. She was the Bookkeeper for East Alamosa Water and Sanitation for 20 years.

After Ralph and Donna both retired, they enjoyed traveling together to various places throughout the USA and Canada. They also served together for ten years in the Denver and Albuquerque LDS Temples. After Ralph passed away Donna continued to work in the Albuquerque Temple for another 10 years.

Her life was one of service, to her family, friends and to her church as a Relief Society president, Young Women President and Primary President as well as many other responsibilities in the LDS Church. Donna enjoyed exceptional health for 89 plus years and lived independently in the home she and Ralph bought the first year they were married. She enjoyed an active social life with her friends up until the time of her illness in early March.

She had a great sense of humor, and a quick wit; she loved to play Crazy 8 and Yahtzee, and she brightened the lives of all who knew her. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed! Donna is survived by her sisters Margaret Jackson and Edith Ganus, brothers-in-law, Gaylon Mortensen and Cecil McGuffin, her children and their spouses along with numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Mortensen, her parents; and siblings, Warren Hostetter, Mary Leone Johnson, Doris Mae Mortensen, Louella Hostetter, Harvey Hostetter, Gladys McGuffin, and granddaughter, Megan Willden. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the LDS Missionary Fund. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, April, 13, 2018 at Rogers Family Mortuary in Alamosa.

The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April, 14 2018, at the Fourth Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, located at 927 Weber in Alamosa, with viewing held from 9:45 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Sanford, Colorado Cemetery. Rogers Family Mortuary of Alamosa is in care of the arrangements.
