Obituary for Doris Arlene Nikhazy Doris A. Nikhazy “Nicky” 71, of Penn Hills, passed away on Thursday, July 19, 2018 at UPMC Monroeville following a rapid progression of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). She is preceded in death by her parents, Daniel and Ernestine (Lux) Nikhazy and twin sisters, who died in infancy. Nicky was born on February 6, 1947 in Pittsburgh, Pa.

She grew up in Aspinwall and graduated from Fox Chapel High School. She earned her degree in Elementary Education from Westminster College and was among the first women accepted at Hamma School of Theology. Nicky’s professional career was devoted to teaching and service to others.

Through the years, she taught preschool, kindergarten, and first grade. She worked several summers as a Counselor at Camp Lutherlyn and she worked as a Teacher/Counselor and Chaplain at Lutheran Youth and Family Services. Just prior to retirement, Nicky worked as the Activities Director at Mon Pointe Continuing Care Center.

She was an avid reader and loved musical theatre. Nicky is survived by her wife, Lori Fell; her son, Benjamin Fell; and her constant canine companions, Teakie and Axl; as well as many dear, lifelong, friends. The family wishes to thank the physicians and nurses in the ICU and Step-Down units at UPMC East as well as well as the nurses, chaplain and social worker at Family Hospice and Palliative Care.

There will be no public service. A celebration of Nicky’s life will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to help with funeral and medical expenses.
