Doris was born on January 13, 1930 at St. Clare Hospital in Monroe, Wisconsin. She died on April 30, 2019 at her home in Fresno, California. Doris was the daughter of Sanford and Leona (Arn) Nybroten.

She and her sister, Shirley Erickson grew up on the family dairy farm outside of Argyle, Wisconsin. Doris spent her school years in Argyle, graduating high school in 1948. Doris married Ross Paulson on June 9, 1951.
