OBITUARY Dorothy Lee MOYE July 14, 1929 – September 5, 2018 DOROTHY LEE (DOTTIE) MOYE, Age 89 of Orlando, a loving and devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and great grandmother, went to be with God on September 5, 2018. Dottie was born July 14, 1929, in Gretna, Virginia, a small farming community; the oldest of ten children raised on a tobacco farm. After graduation from the School of Nursing at Lynchburg General Hospital in 1950, she started her nursing career at the VA Hospital in Richmond.

In 1951, Dottie fell in love with and married 1st Lt. Bernard F. Moye and joined him in Germany where he was assigned. In 1955, they moved to Florida, a place Dottie dearly loved and where she lived for the next 63 years.

Dottie dedicated her life to caring for others. In the early years, she cared for others in the hospital setting including as Chief Nurse of the Neurosurgical and Thoracic Surgical Ward at Tampa General Hospital. Upon arriving in Orlando in 1963, she worked as an industrial nurse for over ten years at Minute Maid Company and then with Martin Marietta Aerospace.

For the next 20 years, Dottie primarily provided care at rehabilitation facilities, including as the Director of Nursing at Parkside Lodge in Kissimmee. It was there that she also became a counselor for alcoholic and drug addiction. Then, when Dottie was in her mid-sixties, when most were retiring, she continued her with her love for helping others working in home health care.

She continued in home health care until she was 82, with the last few years working in the office. Dottie was always compassionate and concerned about others. She not only comforted the sick, but also gave strength, faith and hope to all and did it with a smile.

She epitomized the concept of a registered nurse being an “Angel of Mercy”. In fact, she regularly would run into people on the street who would remind her that she took care of their loved one. The story would then move to how much their family member raved about the love and care Dottie provided during the difficult times.

As they would say – “the best nurse we ever met”. Her love for others did not stop with her nursing career. After raising her brothers and sisters on the farm in southern Virginia, she raised three sons while working full-time at a time when few women were working out of the home.

Dottie always placed her needs beneath the needs of her family. She never missed sporting events, band performances or scout functions. Dottie’s motto drilled into her sons was “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”.

Coming from a farm setting, Dottie was insistent that all three sons would go to college. The most important example she set was her faith in God. God was a daily part of her life.

She was member of various Central Florida Baptist Churches. Dottie frequently hosted her bible study group while living in Rio Pinar. Dottie would frequently be seen at church raising her hands and singing gospel music with the choir.

She also enjoyed her construction mission trip to the Dominican Republic. Dottie was predeceased by her husband Bernie, her sister Peggy and brother Tom. Dottie is survived by her brothers Curtis, Roy and JC.

and her sisters Lucy, Mary and Gracie; her three sons, Bernard F. III, and his wife Eileen of New Port Richey, Ronald L. and his wife, Myra of Melbourne, James E. Moye and his wife, Mari of Winter Park as well as seven grandchildren (Joshua, Kristina, Ronny, Tricia, James, Miranda and Donnie) and two great grandchildren (Katelyn and Brooke). The viewing will be from 6-8 pm on Monday, September 10 and the funeral service will be at 10 am on Tuesday, September 11 at Woodlawn Funeral Home in Gotha. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Family Promise.
