Obituary for Dr. Bill L. McClanahan Dr. Bill L. McClanahan died at his home on May 4, 2018. He was born in Richmond, Kentucky on March 14, 1932 to Herbert C. and Frances McClanahan. He graduated from Henry Clay High School in Lexington, Kentucky and received a BS degree from Eastern Kentucky University in 1954.
He completed a year of graduate studies in Zoology at the University of North Carolina before enrolling in the University of Louisville’s School of Dentistry. He graduated with honors in 1959 and received a DMD degree. He was immediately sent to McCoy Air Force base in Orlando, Florida, and in 1962, received an honorable discharge with the rank of Captain.
He moved to Maitland and established his private practice of General Dentistry and continued to practice in Maitland for thirty-nine years. Dr. McClanahan became very active in the life of Maitland. He and his family joined Asbury United Methodist Church, where he served as Chairman of the Administrative Board, Chairman of the Finance Committee, and Financial Chairman of the Building Committee.
Dr. McClanahan developed the Maitland Professional Center in 1963, and as Maitland grew and the need for office space increased, he developed a professional condominium, the first in Central Florida, and named it Maitland Square. He also was active in organized dentistry. He started up the chairs of leadership in the Dental Society of Greater Orlando and was President in 1975.
In the same year, he was accepted into the Florida Academy of Dental Practice Administration. He was also elected President of the Central Florida District Dental Society in 1980. He was inducted into Fellowship in The International College of Dentists, and two years later, was inducted into Fellowship in The American College of Dentists.
He was an original shareholder of the First National Bank of Winter Park and served on the Board of Directors for eleven years. He was introduced to the sport of Croquet in Highlands, North Carolina and became very enthusiastic and passionate about the game. He encouraged everyone to PLAY!
He began at the Highlands Country Club and helped develop other clubs throughout Western North Carolina. Bill was also a part of the effort in establishing programs at the Country Club of Orlando and Interlachen Country Club in Winter Park. He is survived by his wife, Barbaranelle, and his children, W. Kevin McClanahan, Russell P. Shelton, Michael L. McClanahan, Elizabeth S. Usher, J. Patrick McClanahan, and Barbaranelle S. Rowe.
He was preceded in death by his son, Sean H. McClanahan. He loved his family and was so proud of his seven children and eighteen grandchildren. Dr. McClanahan was a member of All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Winter Park.
His service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 14, with The Rev. Dr. Robert C. Lord officiating. Memorials may be made to All Saints’ Church.
