Obituary of Dr. Byron Tippey Dr. Byron Luther Tippey, age 96, from Marion, went to be with the Lord at 4:45 p.m. on Thursday, February 28, 2019, at Colonial Oaks Healthcare Center in Marion. Born in Van Buren Township on August 18, 1922, Byron was the son of Floyd and Thelma (Tinkle) Tippey. Byron was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving in the 71st Infantry Division Special Troops during World War II.

He achieved the rank of Technician 5th Grade and was awarded the American Theatre Ribbon, EAME Theatre Ribbon with 2 Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, and WWII Victory Medal. On April 21, 1946, he married his loving bride, Helen Opal Zent, and they had two children, Robert and David. Byron began his professional career in education with Ripley County Schools in 1947, where he taught for three years.

From there, he went to Grant County Schools (1950-1951) and then to Marion Community Schools (1951-1961). While with MCS, he received his Master’s degree in 1956. He finished his career at Indiana Wesleyan University (1963-1987), where he retired in 1987.

During that time, he received his Doctoral degree in 1965. Byron was a member of the 71st Infantry Division Association Army and The Government Education Council. He was also President of the Indiana Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (1980).

From 1970 to 1990, he served on the local, district, and general boards of administration with The Wesleyan Church. He was Vice Chairman of the local board of administration for several years and had also served on the Pastors Advisory Committee. Byron was an avid sports fan and had also enjoyed collecting stamps and researching his genealogy and ancestry throughout his life.

He was a faithful follower of Christ and loved studying the Bible. He was a godly servant leader to many, and he was always interested in educating others and researching subjects that would help those in life. He will be missed by his two sons: Robert E. (Alleta) Tippey, Marion, and David W. (LaVerne) Tippey, Marion; grandchildren: Rich (Laura) Tippey, Rob (Melinda) Tippey, Ryan Tippey, Angela (Kent) Santee, Brett (Rachel) Tippey, Sara Tippey, Heather (Chris) Chambers, and Sabrina (Caleb) McKnight; great-grandchildren: Kara Tippey, Rachel Tippey, Emma Tippey, Lyla Tippey, Ava Tippey, Dathan Tippey, Raegan Tippey, Corban Tippey, Meredith Santee, Aedan Santee, Ivan Tippey, Ezekiel Tippey, Sgt.

Kameron Tippey (U.S. Army National Guard), Kersten Tippey, Aurora McKnight, Elliot McKnight, Gracyn McKnight, Peyton Leighty, and Dallas Culpepper; and several nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; loving wife of almost 70 years, Helen Tippey; and brother, Wayne E. Tippey. The family will receive visitors from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, March 8, 2019, at Brookhaven Wesleyan Church, 2960 E. 38th St., Marion, IN.

A funeral service to celebrate Byron’s life will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 9, 2019, at the church with Rev. Tony Bye, Rev. Bob Van Cise, and Rev.

Rob Tippey officiating. Burial will follow at Grant Memorial Park. Arrangements are entrusted to Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave.
