Obituary for Dr. Ed Kosnik Jr Dr. Edward James Kosnik Jr., passed away June 24, 2018 in Charleston, SC. Born at home in Baltimore, MD on May 19, 1945 to Edward and Frances Sczepucha Kosnik, Ed was proud to be 100 Polish.

He grew up with five sisters who called him Buzzy. He was a graduate of Loyola College and University of Maryland Medical School. During a surgical internship at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, he met the love of his life, Sally.

They were engaged ten days after meeting and married three months later in January 1970. After one year training in Neurology at NYU – Bellevue Medical Center, they moved to Columbus in 1971 for his residency in Neurological Surgery at OSU. At this time, he also served as a Captain in the Ohio National Guard.

Specializing in Pediatric Neurosurgery, he devoted 34 years of his life to patients at Nationwide Children’s Hospital performing over 12,000 surgeries. He held many leadership positions including Medical Staff President at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. In 2008, he was named Ohio Neurosurgeon of the Year.

He trained many neurosurgeons including several who also specialized in Pediatric Neurosurgery; his youngest daughter was the most meaningful. While accomplishing professional goals, he and Sally raised four daughters and have been blessed with eight grandchildren who call him Dziadzi, Polish for Grandfather. He instilled in his daughters the values of hard work, compassion, perseverance, and selflessness, while inspiring them to pursue careers related to health care.

He was an avid fisherman and loved spending time in Charleston, SC on his boat, Special Lady named after Sally. His other interests included crabbing, collecting Corvettes, antiques, carousels, Lionel trains, wood working, furniture building and restoring boat motors. He was a true Polish problem solver, could fix anything and build any piece of furniture without blueprints or plans.

He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Sally Chard Kosnik; their daughters Sally Jo Niki (Jeffrey) Shafer, Jennifer Kosnik, Ellen (Dave) Cordle, Dr. Libby (Rhett) Infinger; and his grandchildren Caroline Sally, Kyle Jeffrey, and Jacob Cooper Shafer, Edward James Kosnik, Ella Kathryn and Graham Edward Cordle, Rhett Edward and Lillian Frances Infinger; extended family and countless friends. Calling hours are 2pm-6pm on Sunday, July 1 at the O.R. Woodyard Northwest Chapel, 2990 Bethel Rd. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Monday, July 2, 11am at St. Brigid of Kildare Church, 7179 Avery Rd.

Interment to follow at Union Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held in Charleston, SC on Saturday, July 14. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to The Kosnik Fund, Nationwide Children’s Hospital Foundation P.O. Box 16810 Columbus, Ohio 43216-6810.
