OBITUARY Dr. Joseph Hayne Appleton August 5, 1927 – January 17, 2019 Appleton Joseph Hayne, age 91, of Mountain Brook, died January 17, 2019. He was born August 5, 1927 in Collinsville, AL. At age 2 his family moved to Albertville, AL where he lived until graduating from high school in 1944.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Ann Zimmerman Appleton; his parents, Dr. Shelton and Helen Appleton; brothers, Shelton Appleton Jr and Jack Appleton; and his sister, Helen Appleton Haynie. He is survived by his 6 children, Joseph Appleton and his wife Sarah, Kay Appleton Hill and her husband Herkie, Jeff Appleton and his husband Denis Gibson, Tricia Appleton, Kevin Appleton and his wife Kim, and Kathryn Appleton; grandchildren, Darin Appleton and his wife Kristy and great grandchildren Tucker and Avery James, Ryan Appleton, Karen Hyneman and her husband Casey and great grandson Rhythm, Rachel Hill, Zachary Hindman, Daniel Jenks, Kelly Villarreal and her husband Alex, Henry Appleton, Drew Gibson and his wife Anggra and great granddaughter Melati, Kasey Smart and her husband Jeremy and great grandchildren Riley, Lucinda, and Freya. He attended Auburn University where he received a Bachelor of Civil Engineering Degree in 1947 and University of Illinois where he received a Master of Science Degree in 1949 and a Ph.D. in 1959.

He served on the faculties of the University of Illinois, North Carolina State University, and University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB). At UAB he served as Professor of Civil Engineering, first Dean of Engineering, Distinguished Service Professor of Civil Engineering, and upon retirement in 1990, Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus. During his academic and professional career he was active in professional and technical societies: ASCE Fellow and Life Member, ACI Fellow and Life Member and NSPE Life Member.

He was honored by membership in Tau Beta Pi, Sigma Xi, Chi Epsilon, Phi Kappa Phi, Omicron Delta Kappa; he received the Birmingham Engineer of the Year Award in 1977, and Distinguished Service Award in 2012 from the Engineering Council of Birmingham. He authored a number of technical articles in the area of structural engineering. He was a registered Professional Engineer and served as a consultant in the area of structural engineering.

He was a member of the Exchange Club of Birmingham: President in 1981-82 and Exchangite of the Year in 1992. He was a member of the Irondale United Methodist Church and the Lillian Grissom Sunday School Class. Our beloved Dad, Joe Appleton, was always courageously ahead of his time in many ways, including social equality, and we are all benefitted by his willingness to speak truth.

All of his family is honored by his unwavering love, and he is much loved for eternity. Visitation will be at Ridout’s Valley Chapel in Homewood, AL at 10:00-11:30 on January 21, 2019. Graveside services will be at Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham, AL at 12:00 on January 21, 2019.

It is suggested that donations be made to Irondale United Methodist Church or UAB School of Engineering.
