Obituary for Dr. Linnette Jackson-Myers Linnette Jackson Myers was the 3rd and last girlchild bortn to Cuthbert Christie Jackson and Florence Maude Jackson. She was born at Frome in the Parish of Westmoreland where the sugar cane factories are now. She was the last of 3 girls with the Oldest Inez Carnegie and second Pansy Jackson.
Her father was an overseer of one of the Frome Sugar Estates. Her grandfather was a Scotsman who was sent to Jamaica to work as a distiller in a sugar cane factory. All other grandparents were Jamaican.
Her mother Maude lived in Port Limon, Costa Rica were her father had gone to help build the Panama Canal. With his newly acquired wealth he returned to Jamaica where he bought many properties. The Jackson 3 went to Georges Plain Elemntary School and then on to Mannings High in Savanna-la mar.
They rode their bicycles a long 5 mile ride rain or shine. On graduation from 5th form Linnette went to boarding school at Hilda’s in Browns Town, since at an early age she had a desire to be a physician. At the time Mannings did not offer the science subjects needed to attend Medical school.
Linnette had varied interest from an early age and even played in the School Orchestra mastering the violin. The sisters took their different directions with Linnette trying to keep up with her old sisters Pansy and Inez. Linnette chose her specialty Pediatrics from an early age from truly watching the “birds and the bees” She loved animals and watched them with fascination.
Linnette loved music and there was a piano in the Jackson household and she had fond memories playing folk songs. Her quest for higher education saw her pursuing courses in Nursing at Guys Teaching Hospital in London. The pace was fast and strict discipline was required.
During her only free time, she hitchhiked on holidays from places as varied as Paris to as far away as Romantic Barcelona Spain. Having completed her nursing and midwifery courses Nurse Linnette Jackson retuned to Jamaica in the late 1950s to early 1960s to work at University Hospital. She rose through the ranks and was awarded a Scho0larship to pursue an advanced Diploma in Nursing at Royal College of Nursing a division of the College of London University.
Her mentor during these years was Nita Barrow a Barbadian who had distinguished herself ion the field of nursing. After a few years in the field of Nursing she was still intent on becoming a Doctor and embarked on her quest pursuing medical studies at the University of the West Indies and graduated at the top of her class and embarking on her specialty as a Pediatrician, achieving her life long desire. She rented a small office within a Real Estate Office of a top producing Realtor off Hope Road practicing her Pediatrics and seeing dozens of patients daily while also practicing at University Hospital and Kingston Public Hospital (KPH) Linnette married her first husband in the late 70s Harvey Hunt , a former business executive who pursued a second career from his hobby and love of photography.
He died unfortunately after 18 month of marriage. Linnette then migrated to the USA to be with her sisters in Atlanta GA who had 2 both since retired and taken on new careers after retirement. Dr Linnette Jackson pursued further studies in Public Health and looked forward to remaining in Atlanta to be close to her sisters and her new found career.
She moved in with her sister Pansy who had acquired some properties in Atlanta and they got to rekindle their sisterhood in a property large enough for both of them to enjoy many years. Linnette worked for the state and enjoyed her newfound career and traveled throughout the state of GA. As fate would have it and to the amazement of sisters and friends she rekindled an old flame from more than 30 years ago and reignited a passion from more than 30 years.
This chance meeting ignited a new passion and fire and before she knew it she was swept off her feet by the debonair Lloyd Myers. They both returned to Jamaica and built her dream home in Palm Coast in the heart of Montego Bay overlooking the ocean and the airport. They were each other’s soulmates often referred to as Romeo and Juliet.
Linnette was a dedicated church woman and gave back practicing her faith at The St James Parish church in the heart of Montego Bay. She continued her private upon returning to Jamaica being only partially retired and saw many patients on a daily basis bring their sick children due to lack of accessibility to medical professionals. She soon developed a loyal following of clients calling on her throughout the day and making many recurring appointments.
She would see many patients and many times not charge them or only charge them what they could afford. Even after the passing of her second husband Lloyd Myers, Dr Linnette Jackson Myers kept her high spirits and continued being a landlord with her divided up mini mansion overseeing several renters and dealing with the ongoing landlord tenant issues and continued to see a small loyal group of patients in her mini home medical office. She also cared for her older sister Dr Inez Carnegie during her final years in Jamaica.
During her final years she travelled backed and forth to West Palm beach and finally returned to the US and live in West Palm Beach to seek medical treatment and live with and enjoy the company of her lifelong partner and sister Pansy. They enjoyed many special moments together during her final years. She was able to enjoy many of the functions and outings Pansy and her church sisters would partake in.
She also was able to enjoy many moments with Pansy her son and her grandkids. Her sister Pansy cared dearly for her during her final years, shuttling her back and forth to her numerous doctors appointments and her continued passion to get her health back. She put a smile on every soul she touched and cared for many sick people young and old alike.
The life long bond of the 3 sisters and the paths they paved will not soon be forgotten. The last of the 3 pioneer sisters is now put to rest. She is survived by her Step Son Kevin Myers Nieces and Nephews, Beverly , Deborah and Donald Carnegie and Nicholas Jackson along with many of her family members have children whose lives she has touched.
