Dr. William E. (Bill) Cannon of Fayetteville passed peacefully in his home morning, June 24, 2018. Dr. Cannon was very active in his community for most of his life. He served with the Masons and earned his Master Mason degree.

He was a member of the Knights of Pythias and served as president. During his time as a federal employee, he was the Director of Army Education and Director of the ACAP at Fort Bragg, After Hurricane Katrina, he worked with the Army Corps of Engineers during the rebuilding of New Orleans. After graduating from New Bern High School in 1960, Bill attended the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and then transferred to East Carolina University.

Their he joined and served as the president of the Alpha Phi Omega fraternity. While in a political science class at ECU, he met his future wife Carmean Sawyer. They married in 1964 and remained so until her death in 2017.

He continued to serve his community until Parkinson’s Disease made that impossible. Dr. Cannon is survived by his daughter, Elaine Harris (Tom) of Louisburg; his son, Billy of Fayetteville; four granddaughters, Elizabeth Christman (Sean) of Knoxville, Tenn. , Heather Harris (Bradley Lewis) of Louisburg, Katharine Harris of Wilmington and Alexis Harris of Charlottesville, Va.

; and three great-grandchildren, Megan and Sean Christman, and Isla Lewis. A graveside service will be held at 2 pm at Cedar Grove Cemetery 808 George Street New Bern, NC 28560. Fellowship and lunch will follow at Broad St. Christian Church.
