Dwight Edward Smith, 78, of Smicksburg, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2018, in Denver, Colorado. Dwight was born on July, 9, 1940, to William and Frances (Lehner) Smith of Kittanning.

He graduated from Kittanning Junior-Senior High School in 1958 and went on to pursue a four-year career with the U.S. Air Force. An Airman Second Class, he was based primarily at Morón Air Base in Seville, Spain, where he served in the air security police. He was honorably discharged in 1963.

He married Janet Crissman on April 23, 1966, at the First Church of God in Kittanning. The couple moved to Smicksburg in 1970 and had two children; Dwight David and Nicole. After military service, he held several occupations including work for the Silver Spring (Md.

) police department, a period as a locksmith and several years a quality control manager at the Rola Jensen electronics plant in Punxsutawney. He then worked for 17 years as a roof bolter for the Penn Allegheny Coal Co. During retirement, he worked for several years as a driver for Barker Bus Co. of Kittanning. Dwight enjoyed traveling, making several trips with his wife and daughter to various destinations including Spain, Italy and several cruises to the Caribbean.

He enjoyed frequent visits to see his grandsons in Albuquerque, N.M., and Portland, Ore. , and took great joy in embracing and understanding new technology. He adored his children and was particularly proud that his son, a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute, followed him into service for the U.S. Air Force.

Dwight is survived by his wife, Janet; son, Dwight D. (Carmen) Smith of Albuquerque, N.M.; daughter Nicole A. Siemers and husband, Erik, of Portland, Ore. ; four grandsons: Axel, Levi, Quinn and Keaton; and several sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Joseph L. Smith, Francis (Clair) Smith and James Smith; and sister Billie Ann Patterson.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests monetary donations to help defray expenses. Donations can be sent care of Janet Smith, 103 Barnard Rd.
