Edgar Neal “Buttermilk” Brackmann, age 92 and loving son, husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather died Thursday, January 3, 2019 at home. Born May 26, 1926 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, son of the late Otto W. and Olga (Scheimann) Brackmann. He graduated from Southside High School in 1944 and honorably served his country from 1944-46 during WWII in the United States Navy.

He returned from the war and married Joan Rose Ryan on October 9, 1948. Joan preceded him in death in 1998. His friends affectionately called him “Buttermilk”.

He got that nickname when he was a milkman for Tonne Dairy for many years in Fort Wayne. He was also employed with and retired from Shawnee Middle School after many years. Ed was a member of St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, Leo American Legion Post 409, and the Veteran’s of Foreign War.

Survivors include: Daughter, Susan and Jim Joseph of Fort Wayne. Daughter, Margo and Mike Buckner of Austin, Texas. Granddaughter, Tracy and Craig Hyder of Fort Wayne.

Grandson, Ryan and Krysta Buckner of Fort Wayne. Five great grandchildren: Ashleigh and Michael Whitecar, Morgan Lenwell and Travis LeFever, Brooke Lenwell, and Jordon Lenwell. Brother-in-law, Fred Sheets.

Sister-in-law, Mary Ann Brackmann. He was also preceded in death by his son, Neal Stephen Brackmann in 1953; great grandson, Jordan J. Lenwell in 1989; and his siblings, Maureen Saalfrank and her husband, Salty, Ann Sheets, and Virgil Brackmann. Visitation will be held Monday, January 7, 2019 from 5:00 – 8:00 PM at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, 7308 St. Joe Road, Fort Wayne.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at 11:00 AM at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church with The Reverend Daniel K. Layden officiating the funeral service. There will be visitation one hour prior to the start of the service. Burial with military honors will follow at Lindenwood Cemetery.
