Effie Matilda Davidson Davidek Of Tarentum, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 24, 2019. She was born July 8, 1925 in Brackenridge, and was the daughter of the late John and Matilda (Callaghan) Davidson. Effie lived most of her life in the Tarentum, Brackenridge area.

She was a 1943 graduate of Har-Brack High school and was a Bell Telephone supervisor in Tarentum and in Philadelphia during WWII. She and her husband also owned and operated a restaurant in Creighton and she was employed as a teacher assistant in the Tarentum School District. She was a member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, where she taught Sunday School, was a member of the ladies auxiliary and served on the altar guild.

Effie taught swimming lessons in the Learn to Swim Program at the Tarentum YMCA and was a Girl Scout Leader. She enjoyed gardening, reading, swimming and all Pittsburgh sports. She enjoyed many days in her youth, swimming and teaching friends to swim in the Allegheny River at a long-gone beach in Brackenridge.

Effie especially loved family gatherings with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. One of her favorite sayings was “I’m spryer than all my kids”. Effie told a special memory about working in Philadelphia in 1945.

She and her girlfriend were on their way home from work when they heard that President Roosevelt had died. They immediately turned around and went back to work because they knew the switch boards would be jammed. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Michael R. Davidek, to whom she had been married to for 59 years, her sisters Martha Jean Davidson, Laura Schmaley, and her brother John C. Davidson, Jr

She is survived by her children, daughters Leslie (Bill) Lawrence of Athens Ohio, Karen (Dave Virag) of Fawn, son, Michael of Tarentum with whom she resided, grandchildren Ryan (Elizabeth) of Raleigh, NC, Bonnie Virag (Tim Lutz), of Plum, great-grandchildren Jack and Jenny Lawrence, sister-in-laws, Placeras Davidek, Sandy Davidson and numerous nieces and nephews. There will be no public visitation. Friends and family will be notified of an upcoming memorial service.
