Eileen Solon of Searfish, South Dakota May 6, 1931 – January 17, 2019 Eileen Solon, 87 of Spearfish, passed away on January 17, 2019. She was born May 6, 1931 in Big Sandy, MT to Dale and Laura (Petrie) Valley. When she was a baby the family moved to Winnebago County Iowa so Dale could claim a farm he inherited.

Then came the depression and dry years. The farm was lost. After the war, they moved to South Dakota and bought a ranch south of Lemmon, SD.

Eileen graduated from Lemmon High School in 1949. In 1952 she married Jim Solon. In 1961 the family moved to Hot Springs where Jim was hired as high school principal.

In 1965 they moved to Huron, where Jim served as high school principal for 20 years. In those years, she became involved in SD Futures in Beadle County, Right to Life, Huron Recycling and the Huron Lions Club. Highlights of her life were engaging in politics, travel and catholic endeavors.

She participated in the March for Life in Washington DC to protest in front of the Supreme Court. She escaped the monotony of homemaking by traveling with her family every summer. One of her fondest memories was hiking the Grand Canyon from the north rim to the south rim.

Plus, she was an active member of Republican Women and League of Women Voters. Once she and her husband had retired, they were campground hosts at Posy Lake Utah. In the fall of 1985 they moved to Spearfish.

Eileen enjoyed writing letters to the editor and was never afraid to let her opinions be known to local, state and national politicians. She was an avid reader, a lifelong learner and a crossword puzzler. She also loved to sew and played bridge in several clubs over the years.

She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, the Spearfish Senior Center, Hospital Auxiliary, Lawrence County Republicans and served 2 terms as President of Republican Women. Eileen was a dedicated volunteer. She is survived by 4 children; Dave Solon of Lead, Cheryl Holt of Burbank, CA, Brad Solon of Rapid City and Gerri Moore of Sundance, WY.

She had nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the Spearfish Senior Citizens Center and the St. Joseph Catholic Newman Center. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, January 22, 2019 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Spearfish.

A private family inurnment will take place in Rapid City after the service.
