Born Doris E. Ford, she never went by her first name, nor should you use it when talking to her. She completed the 8th grade and started working at the shoe factories in Newport, where she met the love of her life, Fred. They built a wonderful life together, buying their first home on Brook Road in Goshen where they raised their three children.
Elaine had a great love for flowers where in the 1970’s Fred built her a greenhouse where for many years she operated and sold her blooms along with vegetable plants and dried flowers out of their backyard. In the 80’s, she opened a business in the center of the town of Goshen, selling wallpaper and eventually adding video rentals. One thing that not many people knew about Elaine was her sense of humor and feistiness.
Like the day Fred had his new Kubota tractor delivered and he left for an errand. Elaine figured out how to run it and drove it out into the woods on a trail and hid it on him. In their retirement years, you could always see them taking the Model A’s and T’s out for rides that Fred would restore as a labor of love.
Of course during that time you could hear Elaine yelling at him for bringing the old grease in the house on the bottom of his shoes and tracking it throughout the house. They could be seen at the concerts on the common and going for ice cream runs during the summer at Brick Farm in Unity. Elaine struggled with memory loss for 17 years plus.
She fought it with courage and bravery until the very end. A very special thank you goes to Horse Shoe Pines for 4 years of care and compassion and to the staff at Pine Rock Manor who affectionately referred to her as Grammy over the last 4 years where she was able to pass with dignity. Lastly, Compassionate Care and their staff for their dedicated care, compassion, and support.
Elaine did not wish for any services. A celebration of life will take place at Chris and Sherri’s at 61 Brook Road, Goshen on Sunday, May 19th at 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Goshen Fire Service Assoc.
