Obituary Elaine Nelson Child, age 76, peacefully passed into the embrace of her grandparents and other loved ones on May 4, 2019, in South Jordan, Utah, due to the effects of cancer. She was born December 12, 1942, in Payson, Utah, to Maxine and Orrin Nelson, married Allen Duncan Child in 1962 and they raised their family in the Cottonwood area of Salt Lake City. She is survived by Allen and their three children: Jennifer (Chris) Soutas, Tony (Susana) Child, and Rebecca (David) Bateman and 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Elaine is preceded in death by her parents and brother, Richard (“Dickie”). Elaine lived a life of service. She had a plaque hanging in her kitchen reminding her family that “Duty makes us do things well; Love makes us do things beautifully,” and she did everything with love.

She volunteered her time as a docent at Wheeler Historic Farm, This Is The Place Heritage Park, and served many years in the PTA including as President at Cottonwood High School. She was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many callings. She and Allen served together in the Spanish-speaking Cumorah Branch in Midvale, and developed lifetime friendships there.

It is here she became involved in the Young Women program and realized her tremendous love for the organization and the girls she served. Including the branch, she served for twenty five years as the president on a stake and ward level. She truly blessed the lives of those with whom she served and they blessed hers.

She went on to serve as a host at the Beehive House and twenty years hosting at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building two days a week. She had precious associations with those with whom she served. She spent countless hours researching her family history and helping others to do their research.

Her talents in this area helped to seal thousands of souls to their families. She also had creative talents in sewing, interior design, calligraphy, ceramics, and gardening. As was always the case, these skills were used to bless the lives of others.

She and Allen loved to travel and have been to all fifty states in the U.S., visited all the LDS Church History sites and over 96 temples, and spent time in over fifty countries. She loved learning about the cultures and peoples around the world. Elaine’s viewing will be held Thursday evening, May 9, 2019 from 6-8 pm at Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary: 4760 South State Street, Murray, Utah.
