Eleanor’s Obituary Eleanor F. Schmit, beloved daughter of the late Johanna and Charles J. Schmit, peacefully passed away at her Stroudsburg home on the morning of April 23, 2019, at the age of 99. Eleanor was born March 1, 1920 in New York, NY, and raised in Rutherford, NJ along with her younger brother Charles “Charlie” Schmit. Growing up, Eleanor loved sports and was a natural.

Her brother, himself a highly decorated athlete both in high school and college, often told all who asked, that it was his older sister who was the real athlete of the Schmit family. But Eleanor did not only excel in sports. She was also an excellent student.

After graduating from high school, Eleanor began her lengthy and successful career with Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, retiring in 1989. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Stroudsburg. As an adult, Eleanor continued her love of sports, both as a spectator (she loved her New York, Giants) and as a participant in tennis and golf.

She was a world traveler but always said that nothing that she ever saw abroad compared to her experiences seeing all of America. Eleanor remained an accomplished bridge player well into her 90’s. For many years Eleanor was involved in her homeowners association and was particularly active in its litigation against the founder of the community in which she lived.

Almost to the end of her long and remarkable life, Eleanor remained the strong and independent woman that her family knew and loved. Surviving are her sister in law, Jane E. Schmit; niece, Susan (Edmund) Faulkner; nephew, Charles (Barbara) Schmit, Jr.; grandnieces and nephews; great grandnieces and nephews; and her companion of many years, her cat Rob Roy. Eleanor’s life will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 8th, at the William H. Clark Funeral Home, 1003 Main Street, Stroudsburg; with visitation beginning at 1:00PM followed by the funeral service at 2:00PM with Rev.

Beth Utley officiating. Cremation was private and burial will take place at the convenience of the family at Hillside Cemetery in Rutherford, NJ. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial remembrances be made to the American Cancer Society at www.
