Obituary for Elfego Gonzales “Sonny” Telles Elfego “Sonny” G. Telles, a friend of many and loved by all, has stepped through the veil to meet our Heavenly Father on Thursday, December 13, 2018 in his hometown of Las Cruces, New Mexico at the age of 72. He was born on September 6, 1946 to the late Elfego L. Telles and Dolores Telles. Sonny served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era.

He remained a loyal service member until his retirement on October 1, 1988 at the rank of Master Sergeant. After retiring from the military, he returned to school at NMSU graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication. He became a Special Education Assistant at both Mayfield High School and Alameda Elementary until 2006.

Sonny married his sweetheart Mary Ellen Alvarez on September 6, 1969 in Las Cruces. They were sealed for time and eternity in the LDS Mesa Temple in Arizona three years later. They raised six wonderful children during their life together.

He was a faithful servant to his church and politically active in his community and country. He was a genuine patriot and instilled that spirit in his children. He is survived by his devoted wife, Mary Ellen Telles, children John (Jennie), Robert (Megumi), Karen (Danton), Matthew (Melissa), William and Steven (Casie) as well as his loving mother, Dolores Telles, siblings Yolanda, Barbara, Teresa (Larry), Patricia, Santiago (Sharon), Christy, Estella, and Celestina along with nine grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, two brothers Ernesto and Nestor. Family and friends will gather for the viewing on Wednesday, December 19, 2018 at Getz Funeral Home on the corner of Bowman and Solano. Time of viewing is 4:00-7:00 p.m. Friends are invited to join the family between 5:00-7:00 p.m. Funeral services will take place on Thursday, December 20, 2018 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on 3210 Venus Street at 1:00 p.m. A procession to the Masonic Cemetery at 760 South Compress Road will follow the services.
