OBITUARY Elgene “Buddy” Elgene Holmstrom November 2, 1926 – November 21, 2018 Calbert Elgene “Buddy” Holmstrom Calbert Elgene “Buddy” Holmstrom died Wednesday, November 21, at the age of 92. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, November 24, 2018, with visitation beginning at 10:00 AM, Funeral Service to follow 11:00 a.m., all at Gethsemane Lutheran Church at 200 W Anderson Ln, Austin, TX 78752, interment to immediately follow at Hutto Lutheran Cemetery. Buddy Holmstrom was born November 2, 1926, in Jonah, Texas, to Lambert and Alice Johnson Holmstrom.

He graduated from Hutto High School in 1944 and attended Texas A & M University. In 1948, Buddy and Nannette Payne married at the Hutto Lutheran Church parsonage. They were married 54 years and had five children: Don (Rachel), Kynn, Lane (Glenda), Lisa, and Lori.

His wife Nannette and daughters Lisa and Lori preceded him in death. He worked with his parents as a farmer near Hutto, and then, for several years, was manager of R. B. Spencer and Company lumberyard in Hutto. From 1960 to 1988, he was employed by Stripling-Blake Lumber Company of Austin, and retired as retail store manager in 1988.

Buddy played fast pitch softball for the Hutto team and then for several Austin teams. He was a pitcher, his brother Carroll his catcher, and his brother David played first base. All three were outstanding players and played in numerous state, regional, and world tournaments.

A lifelong member of the Lutheran Church, Buddy grew up in Hutto Lutheran Church and was a longtime member of Gethsemane Lutheran Church, which he served in various capacities. Buddy dearly loved his family and friends and was dearly loved by them. He was a man of gratitude, integrity, and deep kindness.

He loved helping others, whether friend or stranger. Buddy was a devoted and tireless caretaker for his wife and daughters in their final illnesses. He is survived by his two brothers, three sons, and three grandchildren: Daniel, Amanda, and Susanna.

The family is profoundly thankful for the exemplary care Buddy received at Heatherwilde Assisted Living in Pflugerville. His son Lane always claimed to be his favorite child, but Buddy would neither confirm nor deny it. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be given to Gethsemane Lutheran Church or to the charity of your choice.
