Elnora Naught Alford , May 05, 1939 — April 24, 2018

Ms. Elnora “Naught” Alford 78 of Fairmont transitioned from time to eternity on April 24, 2018. Elnora “Naught” Alford was born on May 5, 1939 in Fairmont, NC to the late Lonnie and Allean Alford, who preceded her in death. Elnora had one sister, Martha Mouzon, who preceded her in death, Elnora married Gregory Lewis in 1970 who preceded her in death.

Elnora (Naught) as she was so lovingly called, attended the Robeson County School system. She graduated from Rosenwald High School in 1957. She then left NC to pursue a career, while working as a waitress in Harlem, NY.

During the late 60’s through the early 70’s she got involved in the civil rights movement, where she marched with Dr. Martin Luther King in Memphis, Tennessee, fighting for the rights of the sanitation workers to have a union. This laid the foundation for her becoming an activist for the National Welfare Rights Organization (NWRO), where she was instrumental in opening the first poverty rights action center in South Bronx, NY working to get food stamps and financial assistance for impoverished people. During the late 70’s she became and organizer for 1199 Heath and Hospitals Union.

After a few years she left 1199 to pursue her education, and enrolled in the college of New Rochelle where she obtained a bachelors degree in liberal arts. She became a health care Consultant helping to open the first office of Foremost Homecare in the Bronx, NY. She then partnered with two others to open a homecare branch in NYC on 34th street.

She furthered her work by becoming a consultant for the first African Home Health Care in the Bronx, NY. In 2003 she retired from Foremost, returning to her hometown of Fairmont, NC. Still having a strong love to be of service to others, in 2009 she was hired by the nutrition program for seniors in Fairmont, NC.

In 2012 she became ill and could no longer work and remained at Home under the care of her loving companion, Howard Wilson. Elnora (Naught) Alford leaves to mourn her, Howard Wilson her loving companion of 40 years, her three children, Paula Alford, Alonzo (Belinda) Thompson and Terry (Maybelline) Alford, nine grandchildren, fourteen grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
