Obituary for Elzora Mae Brown Elzora Mae Brown, born October 1, 1928, passed away peacefully with family by her side on Saturday, April 28, 2018, at Hoosier Christian Village in Brownstown, Indiana, and was met at the pearly gates by her two sons (Roger (survived by Donna) and Phillip (survived by Marilyn), her grandson (Matt), her parents (Otis & Flossie Piatt), her siblings (Evelyn, Irene, Henry, Harold (Butter), Maxine, Marybelle and Joyce Ann), and other loved ones who had gone on before. Elzora is survived by her sister (Eileen), her sons, Michael Patton (Nancy), Steve Patton (Tami), Kevin Patton (Mary), Ken Patton (Sherri), her daughters, Linda Greenwell (Vic), Kalyn Phillips (Joe), and Teri Wheeler (Hunter). The extended family includes several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great- great-grandchildren, countless cousins and their families.
Elzora loved to play canasta. There was never a day that went by that she didn’t at least want to play. If someone walked in the house, she would first ask if they were hungry, and then ask when we were going to play cards.
She loved baseball. I will always associate the smell of an iron with a baseball game, because she would stand and iron piles of clothing while watching the game. She loved fishing, and mushroom hunting.
She had a good eye for finding them and knew the best spots. She spent a lot of time sewing quilts for the family and all of us have been touched with a gift of a hand-made quilt from her. She loved to embroider and was very good and creating pretty patterns.
She was a voracious reader. I can remember coming home from school and finding her in the pantry reading the canned goods because the bookmobile hadn’t been by. She was very intelligent and had a quick wit.
She never missed Jeopardy and, because she read so much, was very quick with the correct answer. I always thought she should be one of the contestants. Mom had the greenest thumb of any of the family.
Her house and yard were always full of the prettiest flowers, and she loved flowering trees. I remember as a kid, we always had a big garden, and she always planted a row for God and a row for the animals. She touched a lot of people in her life.
She sang constantly while doing housework. She instilled a great love of singing in her family. There can be no memory of Mom without the music.
She loved it all. She could not read music, but she could pick out a tune on the piano or organ, which she did daily while she was still living at home. Elzora worked as a nurse’s aid for many years and enjoyed taking care of people.
