OBITUARY Emmy Jane NEWMAN November 28, 1921 – January 26, 2019 Emmy Jane Griscom Newman passed away on January 26, 2019. She was 97 years old. She was born on November 28, 1921 to the late Frank and Mary Griscom.

She grew up in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where she attended Girls Preparatory School. She attended Randolph Macon Women’s College and graduated from University of Chattanooga. She was married to the late Fred F. Newman, Jr. Emmy Jane worked at Edgewood Elementary School in the library.

After retiring, she volunteered at the Homewood Public Library Friends of the Library and at First Baptist Church of Birmingham, in the library and church office. She is survived by her daughter, Kelly Newman, and her son, Fred Newman. A celebration of Emmy Jane’s life will be held at First Baptist Church of Birmingham, 2209 Lakeshore Drive, Birmingham, AL 35209, on Thursday, January 31, 2019 at 2:00pm.

Visitation will begin at 1:00pm. Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to First Baptist Church of Birmingham, 2209 Lakeshore Drive, Birmingham, AL 35209, or to the Friends of the Homewood Public Library, 1721 Oxmoor Road, Homewood, AL 35209.
