Ernest Jefferson Grooms, age 90, a resident of the Birmingham, AL area passed away on March 18, 2019. Jeff was born on September 28, 1928 and spent his formative years in the small community of Mulberry, located in Isabella, AL. He entered the US.
Army and worked at U.S. Steel where he retired in 1984. Jeff was a servant of the Lord. He was a longtime member of Ensley Baptist Church and later Central Park Baptist Church.
Jeff took to heart the word of the bible. He served his community by visiting hospitals, driving the elder church members to and from, and working in their yards. He is especially known for giving away $2 bills with a bookmark displaying a bible verse.
Jeff will be remembered for his character, commitment to God, family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Ernest and Maryann Grooms, two sisters Leoid Lecroy and Louise Lecroy. Survivors include his wife of almost 54 years, Frances Walker Grooms; his daughter Stacy Bryant (Greg) of Vestavia; and his grandchildren, Grayson Bryant and Davis Bryant; a sister Ruth Edna Smith; a host of nieces and nephews; as well as special friend and neighbor Lillie Minnifield.
The visitation will be from 10:00 until 11:00 AM, Thursday, March 21, 2019 at Peoples Chapel Funeral Home, Hueytown, AL. A celebration of his life will be at 11:00 AM at the Funeral Home. Burial will be follow at Mulberry Cemetery (Mulbery Baptist Church, Maplesville).
The family would like to thank Comfort Care Hospice for their loving care over the last few weeks.
