Dargan, MD – Ernest William “Ernie” Shoemaker, Sr., 81, of Dargan, MD passed away on Tuesday, April 30, 2019 at his home. He was born on February 6, 1938 in Harper’s Ferry, WV to the late James Stanley and Mildred Longerbeam Shumaker. Ernie was a graduate of Jefferson High School Harper’s Ferry, WV.

He was employed by Carpenter’s Local #340 of Hagerstown, MD. After his retirement he was employed with Washington County Commissioner’s as a Clerk for the County Landfill in Dargan, MD. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving as a Military Policeman.

He previously attended Samples Manor Church of God Dargan, MD. Ernie was a member of Carpenter’s Local #340 of Hagerstown, MD; Antietam Post #236 American Legion of Sharpsburg, MD; Conococheague Tribe #84 IORM of Williamsport, MD; Brunswick Eagles Club #1136. He enjoyed playing Bingo, fishing, spending time with his family especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife Doris Louise Knight Shoemaker whom he married on May 17, 1969; son Ernest W. Shoemaker, Jr. and his wife Tina of Sharpsburg, MD; son Timothy L. Gay of Sharpsburg, MD; son Donald L. Gay of Dargan, MD; daughter Wanda L. Poffenberger and her husband Rob of Sharpsburg, MD; daughter Tina L. Grimm of Sharpsburg, MD; sister Nancy Shumaker of Virginia; sister Patricia Staubs of West Virginia; brother Jeff Shumaker of Maryland; seven grandchildren Doug Reel, Devon Gay, Ashley Grimm, Corey Farris, Chelsea Grimm, Renee Shoemaker, and Ernest Shoemaker, III; eleven great grandchildren Alexis, Zach, Gia, Bristol, Aubree, Bentlee, Cole, Faith, Ernest IV, Julia, and Caleb. He was predeceased by three sisters and four brothers. The family will receive friends at the Osborne Funeral Home 425 S. Conococheague St. Williamsport, MD on Sunday, May 5, 2019 from 6:00-8:00 pm.

The funeral home will be open after 1:00 pm on Sunday for the convenience of family and friends. Graveside services will be held at Samples Manor Cemetery on Monday, May 6, 2019 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Roger I. Martin officiating.
