Niemi, 99, of Sister Bay, Wisconsin, formerly of DeKalb, passed away Friday, December 21, 2018, at Hearthside Cordial Care with her family by her side. She was born May 31, 1919, in Sycamore, Illinois, the daughter of Charles Napoleon and Jenny Elizabeth (Swanson) Clauson. Esther married Niilo ‘Jake’ Niemi on August 31, 1940, at First Lutheran Church in DeKalb.

Esther was employed as a telephone operator after high school and later worked at General Electric in DeKalb for 25 years. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in DeKalb. She is survived by her daughter, Judith ‘Judy’ (John) Morey of Ellison Bay, Wisconsin; two grandchildren, Mark David (Patricia) Morey of Sugar Grove, Illinois, Denise Renee MacDonald of South Elgin, Illinois; great-grandchildren, Matthew David Swift and Grace Elizabeth Morey, Maison Niemi MacDonald and Alexander Jake MacDonald; several nieces and nephews; and her Hearthside family, residents and staff.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jake in 1991; two sisters, Elsie (Pete) Reinken and Edith (Kenneth) Chamberlain; and her parents. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 29, 2018, at Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb, with the Rev. Dr. Janet Hunt of First Lutheran Church in DeKalb officiating.

Burial will follow at Fairview Park Cemetery in DeKalb. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 29, at Anderson Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Esther Niemi Memorial Fund, addressed to the Niemi Family in care of Anderson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 605, 2011 South Fourth Street, DeKalb, IL 60115.
