Evelyn Calhoun January 06, 1933 – May 02, 2019 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook Evelyn Ratliff Calhoun, 86, of Newland, North Carolina went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Thursday, May 2nd, 2019. A native of Grundy, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Dewey E. & Corria Ann Ball Ratliff. She was a Graduate of Grundy High School and resided in Newland, NC since 1953.

Mrs. Evelyn was a Charter Member and regular attendee of the Newland Christian Church. She was a strong Christian woman, always pointing to prayer and seeking the help of God in every aspect of life. A contagious smile and loving advice was freely given to anyone who needed encouragement.

Other passions included singing, gardening, cooking, canning, oil painting, serving her community, and watching her family grow. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son & daughter-in-law: Ferrell & Barbara Calhoun, a grandson: Mark Calhoun, and four brothers: Leon, Zed, Russell, and Don Ratliff and two infant brothers. Survivors include her husband of 69 years: Carlos Calhoun.

Her children: Wanda Pritchard and Kenny Calhoun & wife Kim, all of Newland, NC. Her granddaughters: Marcie Waycaster & husband Chad, Elk Park, NC, Jennifer Deyo & husband Zack, Chapel Hill, NC, Laura Berryman & husband Aaron, Newland, NC and Sarah Calhoun, Raleigh, NC. One Grandson: Lance Calhoun, Newland, NC and fiancé Samantha Johnson.

Great Granddaughter: Brenna Berryman, Newland, NC. Three Great Grandsons: Andrew Waycaster, Elk Park, NC and Malachi Berryman, Newland, NC and Lucas Deyo, Chapel Hill, NC. Two Brothers: Benny Ratliff & wife Suby and Sydney Ratliff & wife Sue, Grundy, VA and several nieces & nephews.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 4, 2019 in the Newland Christian Church with Mr. Nick Daniels & Mr. Phillip Greene, Ministers officiating. Interment will follow in the Fork Mountain Cemetery at Vale. Pallbearers will be selected from her church family.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Newland Christian Church. Friends may also visit with the family at her residence. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Medi Home Hospice and Compassionate Hearts Home Care.
