Obituary for Mrs. Evelyn Marie Johnson Evelyn Marie Johnson was born December 18, 1928 in Lincoln, Nebraska to Rev. Glenn and Clara (Hunkins) Fry. Evelyn’s dad was a Methodist minister resulting in Evelyn living in many towns throughout Nebraska.
Soon after Evelyn’s 7th birthday her mom died. Her father remarried after several years and her stepmother, Nelle (Connell) Fry, helped raise Evelyn and her siblings. In 1946 she graduated from high school in Hemingford, Nebraska.
After spending one-year teaching in a country school she went on to graduate from Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln, Nebraska in 1951. Evelyn married George D. Johnson on July 26, 1953 in Lincoln, Nebraska. George became a Methodist minister and they lived and ministered in Nebraska, Wisconsin and Wyoming before spending 31 years in 7 different locations in Minnesota until George died in 1994.
Evelyn retired later in 1994 staying in Rochester for several years before moving to Minneapolis, Minnesota to live with her son, Dirke and his family. In 2012, she moved into Copperfield Hill Independent Living in Robbinsdale, Minnesota. In June, 2018, after several stokes she moved to EagleCrest Memory Care Assisted Living in Roseville, Minnesota where she died on September 5, 2018.
Evelyn’s life was shaped by her faith, family and the churches she grew up, worshiped and served in. She was proud of being a County Social Worker for more than 30 years. In retirement she was actively involved in church, either Christ United Methodist Church in Rochester, or Spirit of Hope United Methodist Church in Golden Valley.
Her sweet disposition and positive spirit was appreciated by all who knew her. Evelyn was proud of all her family, and she was especially fond of sharing that her father, husband, brother, two sons were ministers and one grandson received a College Ministry degree. Sons, daughter-in-laws, grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her great joy.
She also cherished getting together with and traveling with her brother, sisters and their families. Evelyn is survived by her three sons: Jack (Jan) Johnson of Burnsville, Minnesota, Dirke (Lorna) Johnson of Orlando, Florida, Wesley (Pam) Johnson of Marshall, Minnesota; one sister: Agnes Morris, of Lincoln, Nebraska; six grandchildren: Christine Johnson of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Danelle (Gordon) Radney of Washington D.C., Alyssa (Matt) Miller of Roseville, Minnesota, Jared Johnson of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, Briana Johnson of New York City, New York, Nathaniel Johnson of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota; seven great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband: George Johnson; one sister: Doris Bingham; one brother: Stanley Fry; and two nieces.
Memorial service 2:00 PM Thursday, September 13, with visitation one hour prior at Spirit of Hope United Methodist Church, 7600 Harold Ave. , Golden Valley. Interment later at Oakwood Cemetery in Rochester, MN.
