September 9, 1928 – May 29, 2018 Evelyn Lorene Hartzler was born on September 9, 1928 in West Liberty, Ohio to Emmett and Cora Book Hartzler. She was the second of seven children. Evelyn graduated from West Liberty High School, Goshen College and Oregon State.

On completing her education degree, Evelyn secured a teaching position in Albany in 1950. Soon after, she met Earl Kenagy, a member of Albany Mennonite Church. They married in 1951, and Evelyn joined Albany Mennonite Church where she was an active member throughout her life.

Earl and Evelyn purchased three acres in North Albany where they later built the home where they lived together for 60 years. There they raised three children, David Kim, Karen and Kathy. Many knew Evelyn as Mrs. Kenagy; she taught many classes of first and second graders in the Albany school district over a span of 35 years.

She also taught Sunday school and Bible School for many years at Albany Mennonite Church. When Evelyn retired, she began to quilt. She enjoyed making comforters as gifts and donated many quilts and comforters to Mennonite Central Committee and Western Mennonite School.

Much of Evelyn’s joy came from being with family. She especially enjoyed her three grandchildren. Evelyn is survived by her husband, Earl, her siblings Carol, Hilda, Luci and Emerson, her son David Kim, daughter Karen Perez, son-in-law Gabino Perez, daughter Kathy Mark, and grandchildren, Andrew Mark, Jonathan Mark, and Emily Perez.

A memorial service for Evelyn will take place on Monday, June 4 at 4:30 at Albany Mennonite Church followed by a light supper. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Mennonite Central Committee or Oregon Festival for World Relief.
