OBITUARY Father Damian Towey April 29, 1927 – July 23, 2018 Obituary of Father Damian Towey, C.P. Father Damian Towey, a Passionist priest, died after a brief illness at a hospital in North Palm Beach, FL on July 23rd, 2018 at 11:50pm. He was 91, born on April 29th, 1927. Son of the late John J. Towey and the late Mary Glavey Towey, brother of Mary Farley of Verona, NJ.

Damian was born in Newark, New Jersey. He graduated in 1944 from Our Lady of the Valley High School in Orange, NJ. He served in the US Navy during World War II from 1945-1946 and was awarded the Good Conduct and Victory Medal as well as the American Theatre Medal.

After two years of study at Seton hall College in South Orange, NJ, he attended Holy Cross Prep Seminary in Dunkirk, NY from 1947-1948. He entered the Passionist Novitiate on 1948 and he professed vows on August 15th, 1949 at Union City, NJ. Fr.

Damian received an MA in theology at St. Michael’s Monastery, Union City, NJ in 1956. Bishop Cuthbert O’Gara, C.P. a missionary bishop from the Hunan province in China, ordained him to the priesthood on April 28, 1956 at St. Michael’s Monastery, Union City, NJ. After a year of studying preaching at Our Mother of Sorrows Monastery, W. Springfield, MA, Fr.

Towey commenced study in Canon Law in Rome, Italy. He received his doctorate in Church law in 1960. He taught Canon Law to Passionist clerics from 1960-1967 and was formation director for the Passionists in Baltimore, MD, Scranton, PA, and W. Springfield, MA.

During these years, he was active in the Canon law Society of America and served on a commission that assisted the Passionist Nuns in the revision of their Rule of Life. Father Towey served as Vicar at Holy Family Monastery, W. Hartford, CT from 1967-1968. He was then rector at St. Joseph Monastery, Baltimore, MD from 1968-1974 and at St. Michael Monastery, Union City, NJ from 1974-1981.

He was Vicar for Religious for the Archdiocese of Newark, NJ from 1975-1982. A man with keen intelligence and a literary flair, Father Towey was an associate editor of the Sign, a nationally known monthly magazine produced by the Passionists from 1981-1982. Father Towey was involved in Church law and Passionist leadership throughout his life.

He was Defender of the Bond and a Judge for the Marriage Tribunal of the Archdiocese of Newark, NJ from 1974-1982. He assisted the Passionists internationally and helped revise the Constitutions of the Congregation of the Passion in the early 1980s. He also worked as a Judge for the Marriage Tribunal for the Diocese of Palm Beach, FL for many years.

He was a consultor to the Passionist Provincial from 1982-1990, and an associate retreat director at Our Lady of Florida Spiritual Center, North Palm Beach, FL from 1991 to 2010. In addition to his ministry as a preacher and retreat facilitator, Father Towey was responsible for overseeing the beauty and environmental integrity of the Spiritual Center. Father Damian Towey, C.P. will be laid to rest after the viewing on Sunday, July 29th, 2018 from 2pm-4pm and from 7pm-9pm at the Monastery Chapel at Our Lady of Florida Spiritual Center.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at the Monastery Chapel of Our Lady of Florida Spiritual Center on Monday, July 30, 2018. Father Towey, C.P. will be buried at Our Lady Queen of Peace Cemetery, 10941 Southern Blvd. , Royal Palm Beach, FL 33411 after the Mass.
