Francis A. Singer, 96 years, of Defiance, passed away Thursday, May 9, 2019 at Kingsbury Place, Defiance where he was a resident. Francis was born October 17, 1922 in Delaware Township, Defiance County, Ohio, the son of the late Frank and Mary (Wonderly) Singer. He was a 1939 graduate of Sherwood Delaware High School.
He married his wife of 68 years, Mary Alice Linder on April 7, 1951 in Hicksville, Ohio, and she survives. Francis was a lifelong farmer, raising dairy cattle and grain crops. He was a member of St. Isidore Catholic Church – The Bend where he served in many capacities, including Catechist, Lector, Holy Name Society and Parish Council.
He also served the community as a member and Past President of the Defiance County Landmark, Central Local School Board, Defiance County School Board, Four County Career Center School Board, Defiance County Farm Bureau and Delaware Township Zoning Board. Francis was named All Ohio School Board Member in 1974. He also served as Chairman of the Sherwood State Bank Board, life member of K of C Council 1039, Fairview Athletic Boosters and Sherwood Lions Club.
Francis was a former member of the Defiance County Republican Central Committee. He enjoyed bowling, golfing in his free time, but truly loved to serve his family, church and community. He treasured the time he could spend watching his children and grandchildren in their activities.
Surviving is his wife, Mary Alice Singer of Defiance; six children, Linda (David) Meredith of Uniontown, Pennsylvania, Michael (Phyllis) Singer of Red Bank, New Jersey, Steve (Sheri) Singer of Elida, Ohio, Rick (Susan) Singer of Bluffton, Indiana, Susan (Jay) Mauter of Toledo, Ohio and Jamie (Jackie) Singer of Defiance; 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Bernard Singer; two sisters, Dorothy Elliott and Mary Louise Bloomberg. Visitation for Francis A. Singer will be held Sunday, May 12, 2019 from 2:00 – 7:00 p.m. in the Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral Home, Lynn Street Chapel, 206 North Lynn Street, Bryan, where the Rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. Sunday evening.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 13, 2019 in St. Isidore Catholic Church – The Bend with Father Robert Kill and Father Jacob Gordon officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Isidore Catholic Church.
