Frederick Franklin Everhart , March 25, 1926 — November 19, 2018

Frederick Franklin Everhart, born in Frederick, MD, March 25, 1926, went peacefully home to his Lord and Savior on November 19, 2018, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 44 and ½ years, Elaine, and his dear children Gregory Duke Everhart, Joy Kang, Carolyn Inman and April Woodall, 11 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by son William Everhart and his sister Frances Plunkard Staley.

Fred graduated from Frederick High School in 1943 and immediately enlisted in the United States Navy on May 22, 1943. He served on the USS Antietam as a torpedoman and was honorably discharged on May 8, 1946. He then attended the University of Maryland on the GI bill and earned a BS in the College of Agriculture.

The next adventure took him to the University of Georgia where he was one of three students accepted from Maryland to the College of Veterinary Medicine where he earned his degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1955. In 1956, Fred established the Everhart Animal Hospital on 3914 S. Hanover Street in Brooklyn (Baltimore. ) He treated any animal that could fit through the front door: goats, snakes, monkeys, birds, rabbits, a lion cub and many cats and dogs.

In 1967 he earned his Bachelor of Law degree from the Mt. Vernon School of Law and in 1970 the Juris Doctor degree from the University of Baltimore. Realizing the need for after-hours veterinary care, Fred established the first veterinary emergency clinic in Maryland which is now the Emergency Veterinary Clinic on Mellor Ave.

in Catonsville. Always an avid athlete, Fred won many gold and silver medals while participating in Senior Olympics. In 2009, Fred had a massive brain hemorrhage from blood thinners but, by the grace of God, he made a remarkable recovery.

He detailed his experiences in a book he wrote, Death’s Door Denied. A devout Christian, he loved his church and church family. He served as a volunteer with the Howard County General Hospital pastoral care program until he suffered a stroke in 2014.

His final words were, “Amen, Amen,” following the reading of God’s Holy Word by his pastor in the worship service held at his bedside. Fred was a man of extraordinary courage, strength and love. Through all the profound accomplishments he achieved, Fred considered his family to be the greatest one of all.
