Obituary for Fred Kapatkin Fred Kapatkin: born September 22, 1927; died February 18, 2019 Fred Kapatkin was born in Brooklyn NY and was the only child of Herman and Pearl Kapatkin. He accelerated through school and entered Brooklyn College before his 16th birthday. He was in the Merchant Marines during the last year of World War II.

He then returned to college, but since he decided to major in business he transferred to the City College of New York. He met his future wife, Selma Levy, at a college party. They were inseparable and married on August 6, 1950.

In 1952, one day after their second wedding anniversary, their son Keith was born. On March 13, 1956, their daughter Amy was born. Fred worked as an accountant while attending Brooklyn Law School at night.

After graduation, he had a long career in business management, with most of his clients being architects and engineers. He worked diligently to support his wife and two children. Fred enjoyed reading, playing tennis, trying new restaurants, seeing movies, attending Broadway shows and operas, and travel.

Most of all, he loved his family. Fred proudly supported both of his children in their educational pursuits. Keith became a physician and Amy became a veterinarian.

In 2004, Fred and Selma moved to California after spending most of their lives in New York City and Long Island to be near Amy, her husband, and their young daughters. Selma died on October 6, 2017. Fred was heartbroken but had very fond memories of their 67 years of marriage and all the joy they had during that time.

Fred succumbed to an acute illness after a short hospitalization at UC-Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, CA on February 18, 2019. Fred is survived by his two children and their spouses, Robynne Kapatkin and Robert Poppenga, seven grandchildren (five of whom have spouses or significant others), and five great grandchildren. He will be laid to rest next to his beloved wife, Selma, at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery on Thursday February 21 at 11AM.
