Gary J, Slyh, 79, of Columbus, OH passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 3, 2019 in the Laurels of Walden Park. Gary was born in Columbus on October 1, 1939 to the late Henry J. and Margaret (Thompson) Slyh. He was employed by the Nabisco Corporation as a delivery driver and worked for the Ohio State University- Athletic Department, preparing the field for football games and later in the Press Box with the crew.

Gary was a Bowling aficionado, joining the ABC at the age of 17 and joining the All-Star League a year later. At the age of 19 he was awarded a franchise in the All-Star League, being the youngest bowler to ever receive a franchise and winning the league that year. Gary finished that season with highest average and most improved bowler.

In 1962 he and his colleague took the lead in the Classic Division Doubles at the ABC in Buffalo, NY, earning him 2nd place in all events with a combined score of 1867 and 7th place in the singles. He was a bowling instructor for eight years, working with junior and adult bowlers. In 1999 he was elected to the Greater Columbus Bowling Association Hall of Fame.

Gary was also a member of the AmVets Club, Post 89. Besides his parents, preceding him in death was his Aunt Helen Scamaborn. Surviving Gary is his wife of 51 years; Patti (Johnston) Slyh, one son; Gary J. Slyh, II, one daughter; Krista Slyh and his fur grandbabies.

Family will receive friends on Wednesday, February 6, 2019 in the RUTHERFORD-CORBIN FUNERAL HOME, 515 High Street Worthington, OH 43085 from 5-7:00 PM. Services will be held Thursday, February 7, 2019 at 10:00 AM in the funeral home, Reverend Stephen Hielkema, Chaplain for Bella Care Hospice, presiding. Interment will follow in the Franklin Hills Memory Gardens, Canal Winchester, OH.
