Gary J. Winter, age 75, of Alexandria, died Monday, October 22, 2018, at Knute Nelson Care Center in Alexandria. A memorial mass will be held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, October 30, 2018, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alexandria with Fr. Steve Binsfeld officiating.

Inurnment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Alexandria. Visitation is 5-7 p.m., with 5 p.m. parish prayers, Monday, October 29, at the Lind Family Funeral Home in Alexandria. The visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.

Gary James was born on December 22, 1942, to Edward and Hildegard (Roelike) Winter in Melrose. He was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic Faith. Gary attended Osakis Public Schools.

He met the love of his life, Margaret Bentfield, at a church dance in West Union. They were united in marriage on April 4, 1964, at St. Alexis Catholic Church in West Union. Following their marriage the couple moved to Alexandria where they raised their three children.

Gary operated Gary’s Auto Service in Alexandria until 1994. He worked for the City of Alexandria at the Fire Department until he retired in 2008. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and riding his Yamaha Motorcycle.

Gary was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council 4718, and the Alexandria Fire Department. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister and brother-in-law, Dolores and Glen; sister-in-law, Lucky; and friend, Bill Platto. Gary is survived by his wife of 54 years, Margaret; three children, Mark (Jill) Winter of Danville, Kentucky, Pam Winter of Tallahassee, Florida, and Todd (Liz) Winter of Alexandria; brother, LeRoy Winter; seven grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Urnbearers are his children.
