Obituary for Mr. Gene Marlin Bachman Gene Marlin Bachman, 78, of St. Louis Park, Minn. , passed away April 10, 2018, at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park. His body lost its fourteen year war against Parkinson’s Disease; but, his spirit won the battle, and Gene is rejoicing in a new life in heaven with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Born April 27, 1939, and raised until his sophomore year in high school in North Bend, Neb. , Gene’s parents Clarence and Gertrude (nee Hinn) Bachman moved the family to Alexandria, Minn. , where Gene played basketball for, and graduated from, Central High School, Class of 1957.

A graduate of St. Cloud State in 1961, Gene immediately used his accounting degree as an employee of Arthur Andersen & Company, Minneapolis, then Big Bear in St. Cloud. From there he used his financial and leadership skills at a variety of agribusiness and commercial companies until retirement. Throughout his career that spanned from 1961 to 2014, he was largely hired to help strengthen a company, trim what was needed to be trimmed in a fair and just manner, and then continue to support a healthier and viable company.

Gene is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 57 years, Carolyn (nee Berg); children Brenda Weber, Julie (Jeff) Long, Mike (Deb) Bachman; brother Jim (Karon) Bachman; beloved grandchildren; bonus daughter Mary Kay (Ron) Hamell and her family; and a host of relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother; sister June (Fred) Armbrust; infant brother Jerry; nephew and godson Tom Armbrust. When he wasn’t working, which began with his first paid job mowing yards at age 12, continued through high school, and then college where he worked summer jobs delivering milk, laid railroad track and managed a bowling alley, Gene could be found singing in the choir, shooting hoops, playing softball (which he did until he turned 60), or most often, playing golf.

These gifts and skills were ones that he passed down to his children and grandchildren. He and his wife spent countless hours sitting in the bleachers or auditoriums. It’s where he cheered and clapped the loudest, beamed the brightest, and gave lingering hugs accompanied by his great-hearted and genuine smile to not just his kids but their friends too.

Gene had a strong belief in God, Jesus’ life and resurrection, and the working of the Holy Spirit. He brought this personal relationship and walk in faith into every relationship he had. Zion Lutheran Church in Hopkins, his church home for 30+ years, allowed him (and Carolyn too) to serve in a variety of capacities, touching many people of all ages.

Visitation: Friday, April 20 from 6-8 p.m. at Washburn-McReavy, 1400 Mainstreet, Hopkins, MN 55343. Celebration of Life: Saturday, April 21 at 11 am at Zion Lutheran Church, 241 5th Ave N, Hopkins, MN 55343, with visitation one hour prior to service. A luncheon will follow.

Burial of cremains will be early summer in Holmes City, Minn. , at Rose Hill Cemetery. The family asks that memorials be directed to Zion Lutheran Church, Hopkins (indicate Gene Bachman in the memo), or The Parkinson’s Foundation.

Advances made regarding Parkinson’s provided Gene a longer quality of life. To donate, please follow the link to Moving Day Twin Cities, an annual fundraiser held every first Saturday in May. Gene and his team “Bachman Boosters” walked this event in 2017.
