Geneva Little May 04, 1931 – January 30, 2019 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook| Send Private Condolences Geneva Victoria Little was born on May 4, 1931 to the late Samuel and Anna Giles-Parker, in Sampit Community of Georgetown County, South Carolina. Geneva came from a large family of ten brothers and sisters. She learned at a young age to cook and to care for her siblings.
After the death of her mother, her father married a caring woman, Grace Rutledge. That union brought nine additional children. Geneva attended Rosemary High School in Andrews, SC then relocated to Jersey City, New Jersey where she graduated from Dickerson High School.
Geneva joined Mt. Olive Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend William Williams, where she sung in the Celestial Choir. She moved to New York City to pursue a career in nursing.
Geneva loved being a nurse. She started her career at the former Sydenham Hospital, then to Harlem Hospital. Geneva retired in 1993 from Mt.
Sinai Hospital where she was recognized and awarded for her loyal, dedicated and compassionate service. She was highly esteemed by her colleagues and fondly adored by her patients. In 1955, Geneva married the late James Arthur Little.
To this union three children were born: Kevin, Lois and David. Geneva was a dedicated mother who loved and faithfully cared for her family. She was a firm disciplinarian who supported her children and was there for them when they needed her.
She was from the “old school” who taught her children how to respect their elders and to help someone in need…and she didn’t hold back the strap either! ! !
Geneva, who was affectionately called “Neva” by family and friends was well loved and admired by many. Some adopted her as “Ma” and “Grandma”. She had a great sense of humor and loved people.
She lived a simple life and was Hospitable: a great cook who loved to cook, entertain and spread her table for family and friends; she opened her home to shelter those in need. She embraced many of her children’s friends who often came bearing gifts for her and would often take her out. Compassionate: the neighbors knew that she was a nurse and when they took sick at home, they would often call her to their bed side for help.
Merciful: she helped family and friends who faced the hardships of drug abuse and prison; she would encourage family members strung out on drugs to turn to God for help. Generous: she often helped those in financial straits. She was a green thumb who would give pieces of her plants away.
Creative: a great seamstress who sewed clothes for herself, her daughter and for others; even taught her son how to crochet. Frugal: she knew how to stretch a dollar and save up for a rainy day. Kind: on several occasions, she received into her home a young motherless, homeless man, and took him under her wings as “his mother”.
Comforter: she often prepared food for and helped families in mourning; she befriended another motherless young man who tried to commit suicide. In the 1970’s, Geneva joined Shiloh Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend Wainwright, Sr., where she served faithfully on the Nurses’ Board. Geneva began to experience afflictions in her body in 2016, but the effectual and fervent prayers of the righteous availed much.
God answered our prayers and healed her body. In 2018, her health began to decline. Relentless prayers went up to God and once again He showed His miraculous power.
However, Geneva was ready to make her transition. Geneva departed this life on January 30, 2019 after she reaffirmed Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. Geneva leaves a legacy of lovingkindness.
Geneva will be greatly missed and leaves to cherish her memories: her loving children, Kevin (Molly), Lois, and David; sisters, Etta Keaton, Albertha (Andrew) Timmons, Shirley Brunson, and Joyce Rutledge; brothers, Isaiah (Lolita) Parker and Pastor Clifford Parker; in-laws, Delores Parker, Anna P.
