George Brantley Butler June 01, 1936 – April 16, 2019 Share this obituary Send Flowers Sign Guestbook| View Guestbook Entries| Send Sympathy Card George Brantley Butler, 82, a resident of Summit, MS, formerly of Bentonia, MS passed away April 16, 2019 at his residence. He was born June 1, 1936 in Isola, MS to Tom Butler and Treva Spell Butler. Visitation will be Friday, April 19, 2019 at Hartman Jones Funeral Home in McComb, MS from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM and will continue on Saturday, April 20, 2019 at Mt.

Olivet United Methodist Church in Bentonia, MS from 9:00 AM until services at 11:00 AM. Burial will be in the Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church cemetery.

Dr. Jim Porter will officiate. Married to Carolyn H. Butler for 25 years. Was a faithful member of the Mississippi United Methodist Conference.

He was a pastor for 42 years. Pastored Methodist churches since June 1990: Bethesda, Pleas-ant Ridge, & Ebenezer of the Brookhaven District, Mt. Olivet, Satartia, Wesley Chapel, Fletcher’s Chapel, Bethany, Ellison, & Pickens of West Jackson District, Kalem of East Jackson District, St. John’s, and Bradley’s Chapel (Vicksburg) of West Jackson District for a total of 27 1/2 years.

Prior to this, he was a Baptist pastor for 15 years. During his years as a Methodist pastor, he also had the honor and privilege to serve as a spiritual director at 14 Cursillos, 2 Emmaus walks, twice at Kairos, and a Kairos Outside. Prior to pastoring, he served 8 years in the U.S. Army National Guard as a mess sergeant and worked for the Humphrey’s County Experiment Station collecting data from farmers.

He graduated from Clarke Memorial College, Newton, Mississippi, and the MS Methodist Conference Course of Study. Other than pastoring, George enjoyed gardening and canning, fishing, cooking, collecting antiques, auctioning, and working with wood. He has built several houses, including the “cedar cabin” in the Mt.

Olivet Community where he and wife Carolyn lived until moving recently to Summit, Mississippi to be near their children. He is preceded in death by: Son: Allen Butler; Former wife: JoAnn Butler; Parents: Tom & Treva Butler; Brothers: Tommy, James, and Pat Butler; and Sister: Colleen Butler Hardin Survivors: Wife: Carolyn Holmes Butler, sons (given to him by his wife): Michael R. Dunaway, Jr. (wife,Dustie), and Jason C. Dunaway (wife, Kimberly), daughter: Apryl Butler Crane; sister: Frances Pace, grandchildren (of Carolyn & him): Caleb, and Kaylee Dunaway;Michael III, Brantley Blake (wife Jenna), and Makayla, other stepchildren, grandchildren, step grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, nine sisters-in-law and eight brothers-in-law; many nieces and nephews,and a host of friends. In lieu of flowers donations made in Mr. Butler’s name may be sent to: But God Ministries/Haiti 404 Fontaine Place, Suite 104, Ridgeland MS 39157 Medical, Dentistry, and Children’s Ministry groups are sent to Haiti through But God Ministries several times during the year.

This ministry is dear to our hearts because we have had a daughter-in-law and grandchildren serve on some of these teams. Or to – Mississippi Methodist Cursillo Scholarship Fund, P. O. Box 13851, Jackson MS 39236. George’s wish is that no Christian who desires to enrich their Christian walk by attending a Cursillo weekend be hindered due to lack of funds.
