Obituary for George Ennis Gupton Jr. George Ennis Gupton, Jr., was born on October 22, 1933, to the late Mary Belle (Coggin) Gupton and George Ennis Gupton, Sr., in Halifax, NC. He died at Roper Hospital on November 30, 2018, in Charleston, SC. He is preceded in death by a son, David Michael Gupton, and his wife Greta Gupton.

George grew up in rural NC, where his family share-cropped and farmed in the tobacco fields of NC; he was also educated in NC. George served in the US Army and Reserves, as a staff sergeant from 1952 to 1960; he served during the Korean War, and was stationed in Pyeonchang, South Korea for 18 months. For his service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal with 2 Bronx Stars, and the United Nations Service Medal.

Upon discharge from active service duty, at Fort McClellan in Anniston, AL, he met and married Greta (Margaret Jernigan) Gupton, on June 2 1955; they were married for 42 years, until her death on April 7, 1998. Georgie was lucky in love, and in 1998, he met the second love of his life, Jeannette DuBois. They were together for over 20 years, until his death on November 30, 2018.

George was a member of Old St. Andrew’s Parish Church, and the local American Legion Post #179. He was a Life Member of the Charleston Elks Lodge #242, and was a member there for over 56 years. He was very active in the Elks Lodge’s activities, especially on their golf committee and pool committee.

He was an avid golfer and pool player, and he played in / chaired many charity golf tournaments for the Elks Lodge to raise money for several local charities. His favorite charities were the Elks Alzheimer’s Project and the Elks National Foundation. He was proud of being a Korean War Veteran, and was fortunate to be a guest on the final Freedom Honor Flight of The Lowcountry, to Washington, DC, in 2015.

He was also a great fan of the Clemson Tiger’s football team, and owned possibly 30 to 40 Clemson shirts and caps, along with much more Clemson memorabilia. George is survived by his love, Jeannette DuBois of Charleston, SC, his children, Debra Gupton of Charleston, SC and his son, Kenneth (Page) Gupton of Charlotte, NC, his grand children Justin (Emily) Gupton of Charlotte, NC, Lindsey Laurent (Christian) Colón of Charleston, SC, and Maxcey (Josie) Gupton of Charlotte, NC, his great-grandson, Jackson Gupton of Charlotte, NC, and two sisters, Molly Gupton Jordan of James Island, SC and Mae Gupton (Jim) Purdy of Greensboro, NC. He had many nieces and nephews that he also loved dearly.

The funeral will be on held on Wednesday, December 5, 2018, at 2:00 pm, at St. Andrew’s Parish Church located at 2604 Ashley River Road, Charleston, SC, with the family greeting guests starting at 1:00 pm, in Gilchrist Hall. There will be a reception following the service, at the Charleston Elks Lodge located at 1113 Sam Rittenberg Blvd. , Charleston, SC 29407.

Burial will be a private service, at a later time. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Charleston Elks Lodge Alzheimer’s Major Project Fund, 1113 Sam Rittenberg Blvd. , Charleston, SC 29407.
